New RZ500 Owner.

#1 Post by Vonzipper » Thu Apr 03, 2014 7:32 pm

Hi Guys, got my first RZ500 last weekend close to 30 years after i first rode one back in 85. I am no stranger to 2 strokes and have 2 Canadian RZ350's an 86 and 90 which I totally restored. The bike is in a bad shape but for the most part intact, only missing the belly pan, rear fender and left side side panel. I plan on restoring it as best as i can and will be on site learning as much as i can about the 500 from your posts. The bike is a barn find and was stored for about 20 years. The bike was located on an acreage 7 hours round trip from my house and will be shipped to me this weekend. Can't wait to get started on this project and will start a restoration thread on it.

Don't worry about that tank Geoff. That will buff right out ;-)

Welcome aboard. If I can help with parts just let me know.

Von,

Is the engine free, will it turn over?

Let me know if you need any engine work, I'll be glad to help you out.

Great purchase, I hope it was reasonably priced. What always amazes me is how people buy these iconic bikes and after some years of use, toss them one side and treat them like crap.
After storing them like a numpty they expect a ton of cash for sentimental value or for what it was YEARS ago,, yada yada.
The good thing now is that it will be saved and appreciated by an owner who values it.

The long journey to civilisation begins.

Look between the two trees in the middle of the picture, you will see a garage where the 500 was held captive for years.

Thanks for the tip silverstrom, the tank did buff out fairly good, a little more buffing will take care of the rest. lol

That's some magical self repairing gas tank and buffer you have there as the right side Yamaha logo must have been hiding under all that rust :smt017 ???

That was very dirty. I could not see the fuel sticker under all that dirt. Great find and best wishes on progress. Plan on engine work. Great to see a restoration but if it does not run that will be to bad.

24 Dec 14, Christmas Eve I finally finished my restoration on my RZ500. Its come a far way in a few short months from the condition it was in. The gas tank and side fairings were toast, luckily for me the PO included the spare tank you see here. The motor was flooded out with gas/oil mixture and all the seals were bad. But it was a newer motor that just needed refreshing. So this is the Christmas gift I waited on for 30 years.

Congratulations on a great restore in such a short time.
I wish I had the skills and ability to apply myself like that.
