Dear all,

First post on the forum, thanks for having me.
Long time Yamaha fan and professionally linked to Yamaha both in Europe as well as Japan.
Looking into buying an RZV500R/ RD500.

I ran into an RZV500R in France that looks very mint.
Further inspection and browsing the forum did raise some questions, hopefully you are willing to shine a light.

According to seller it was imported from Japan, to UK and then to France.
I havent seen the 'carte grise' (documents) or managed to have a look at the bike in further detail but the VIN plate shows a 47X code. (see img)
Is it a frankenstein fitted with alu frame, adjustable front forks, double temp/ fuel function and/ or different paint scheme?
Or can it be a genuine RZV500R that has been relabeled as a 47X due to French COC?

Attached some images I managed to take before my phone battery died.
Plan to have a closer look at the bike in one or two days time.

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts
KR, Dennis

Hello and welcome

It's a genuine RZV500R that has had a 47X vin plate added.

If you can tell me what the 47X number is i will check my records and tell you which country the number comes from.

If you go and look at the bike check the vin number on the head stock (should start 51X) and the engine number which should just be 51X

I'm curious to see if the headstock number is still 51X. Whoever added the 47X data plate looks to have removed the last 3 digits from the VIN #. It shows 47X-002 then it looks like it has been ground off. I'm wondering if they also removed the 51X # from the headstock and re-stamped it with the 47X #. That would be the common approach to altering the VIN #. Proceed cautiously before purchasing.

Hi.
Even the speedo is a RZV one.
The most likely is the plate has been taken from a crashed RD500LC one and put on the bike.
It's very difficult to register a non imported bike here ....
To my point of view, there are too many RZV parts on this bike for it is a modified 47X RDLC.

I think the bike is a proper 51X RZV, but it has had the 47X data plate added to enable it to be registered as an RD500. The question is, what VIN is it registered under now? That data plate has been altered and I'm assuming the headstock VIN must also have been altered. That is what we need to see next. What is stamped on the headstock?

If you're looking for a bike to have fun with the VIN might not be a big deal, but if you get stopped and they realize the VIN has been altered it won't be much fun when they take your bike.

Thanks for all your prompt replies.

I was incomplete in previous post by not mentioning I blanked out the date plate no as a courtesy to the current owner.
Will check the headstock and engine casing this afternoon.

Dennis,

The 47X is the German/European model and it was never sold with the aluminum frame.

Obviously a fake number to get the bike road legal if youre lucky.
If not its a recycling of stolen material.

In any case a guarantee for future trouble and I'd step back as far as I can.

EU regulations for motorcycle import require a homologation.
Every manufacterer needs to do so for their models.
Generally they use the pre-production models for this purpose, that should be scrapped afterwards.

In this case the RD500 has a homologation and Yamaha Motor Europe decided not to homologate the RZV models.
In order to import a RZV it is easier and cheaper to register it as a RD as this has a EU Certificate of conformity - COC.
So for me to import it in NL it should be fairly easy to do so as a RD. I expect the same happened in UK and/ or France.

Strictly speaking this is not correct for the entire EU.

In Denmark we are allowed to import ANY vehicle which previously was licensed in any other country. The only requirement is that the vehicle must fulfill the technical requirements which were valid at the time the vehicle was first licenced (the first registration where ever in the world the vehicle is imported from). And it gets even better. We are allowed to do so on vehicles that comes without paperwork and if the motorcycle is manufactured before 1993 there is even no requirement for a VIN number.

I have done it many times. No problems. Since we are member of the EU, I am pretty sure that the motorcycle can then be re-exported to any other EU-country, as it has official danish paperwork ;-)

We might have many strict rules around here, but vehicles are easy to deal with.

then I might have to visit Denmark!

Same applies to a certain point with kit-cars in UK
Had the plan to register our Audi Urquattro replica and GT40 kitcar there and then import in NL.
Found a workaround to register first one in NL directly and never managed to complete the second one...

Is it an actual 47X engine or has it been re-stamped. Good to know as there are differences.

And the headstock VIN?

It appears to be a genuine 47X engine.
Head stock number doesnt match either, its a 1GE.
So too many RD related numbers for an RZV.
Any numbers to that can not be traced back.
I will see if the seller is willing to lower the price considering this background.

Thank you all for the efforts, specially Steve for the context.
Hopefully I can return a favour.
