That will be hard to answer. It depends on the bike, the location, the rider, and how big his balls are.

Back in the day there was a long 1 mile down hill on the last leg of one of the breakfast run routes we used to take from Cape Town that ended in a T junction in Glencairn between Fish Hoek & Simon's Town.

34° 8'45.93"S
18°24'20.57"E

Looking at the road in Google Earth now I am amazed nobody every ended up in the sea LOL

As we crested the hill groups of 2,3 or 4 bikes would break away for the downhill run to see who would be fastest.

I was on my FJ1100 one day and I took off with a group comprising an FZ750, RG500 and RD500. I believe we all had the normal exhaust, jet and intake mods of the day done.

Honestly, once we got to about 260kmh indicated, almost off the clock - there was not much between any of us. The FZ750 took the early lead I believe but I reeled him in easily and I believe in the end the RD and RG where right near us riding in the draft - bat shit crazy stuff we used to do LOL

The RD was right there as well and I am sure I sat up before the others since I knew the portly FJ needed all the stopping distance it could get.

Now that was down hill and the speedo was probably over reading by 10 or 15kmh - on the flat my FJ1100 would not pull past 250kmh on the speedo - which was probably close the real top speed of about 235kmh.

The RG and RD always seemed to be about the same speed as the FJ whether on the flat or downhill runs. Of course the bloody FZR1000's, CBR1000's and ZX10's would pass us on their way to a true 260/270 of even faster with mods.

Gamma top speed is all relative to the state of tune. The test bikes supplied by Suzuki for the magazine road tests back in the day were er .... massaged by a well known tuner in order to achieve 146.9 mph. We have dyno'd loads of box stock Gamma's and they all dyno'd at 72 to 75 r.w.h.p. That is simply not enough to go 146 mph!

I'd take the 148 mph as tested from the Yam 500 with a pinch of salt too. The RG500 is far superior technically to the Yam with those funky manifolds for the carbs.

That said, an RZ500 Yamaha set the Bonneville World Land Speed record in 1985 at 145.377 mph. That record held solid for 13 years until 1998 when my Suzuki RG500 Gamma production bike raised the record to 148.242 mph. A record that still stands today. I had a best one way speed of 161.559 mph but the bike fouled a plug on the return run...... otherwise the record should have been well over 150. But that's Bonneville.....Not an easy place to go fast.

So there you have it, the RG500 Gamma is the official World's Fastest 500cc production motorcycle. As I like to say.... the bull**** stops at Bonneville.

How much ground speed is lost at Bonneville due to the unique traction of the salt?

I mention this as I have spoken to folks that have taken cars to the salt that have run slower than they run on asphalt and concrete - by a good few %age points slower and using the very same measuring equipment.

Can't really answer that as the salt conditions are constantly changing. If the salt is damp it's slow, and if its dry, hard, and smooth it's fast. I've not really had a problem with traction. It's more of an issue for larger capacity bikes and traction control has mostly resolved that.
The bigger issue is altitude. Corrected air density means you can be running at the equivalent altitude of 6 to 7,500 ft!!! This can give you around a 20% loss in power. Cars also have a lot more traction issues than bikes.

Yamaha RZ350 production bikes. Bike has to be box stock externally and you must run the stock carbs and pipes.

The SCTA record was set back in 1995. 128.537 mph.
The AMA National record in 2013 129.579 mph
