yes , TZRs and TDRs and Rd500 have similar cylinders .
if i remember well , some sizes are the same 56.45 for sure , then i think the TZR/TDR have increments of 0.20mm while the RD500 pistons have +0.25mm increments , clearances are diffrant , not much though! and some really have holes on exhaustside , i forgot wich ones .there s no need to find others the ,TZR/TDR pistons are fine and better then the oem RD500 , coz also later models and higher tunes.
only when you look close you ll see the diffrance , the TZRs have more gap between the rings etc.... , all small diffrances .
If you compare both barrels you will also see some diffrances , although it will be very little , no need to panic ,the pistons you ve are original yam and okay to use in the RD500 and are considderable better quality then some aftermarket ones

Thanks for your answer.

I understood the standard piston is + or -0,2mm to the RD std piston.

http://www.teile-katalog.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; says that they are +0,25mm pistons:

I`ll collect all this informations and put it into my database ;)

I just happen to have the 1988 TDR250 fiche if anyone needs it.

If you (or others) need it, i can give you a link to the 1988 TDR250 service manual (french) => PM ;)

There is the information, that the piston to cylinder clearance should be 0,05-0,055mm (RD500 0,06-0,065mm)

Edit: I have also found a TZR250 2MA service manual

Today i found time to compare the pistons.

99999-02109 (piston and ring set front +0,25mm = 56,65mm => same as +0,25mm 47X piston)
- 2YK-11635-04 (piston +0,25mm)
- 3XC-11610-10 (ring set +0,25mm)

Differences:
Holes at the EXHAUST side

Holes in the piston pin bore area (the 47x pistons don`t have them)

Other type piston ring pin (upper ring):
TDR/TZR piston:

RD500 piston:

Same type piston ring pin (lower ring):

RD500:

I used pistons like in the post above. I set clearance to .002" or .05mm. Was suprised that ring gap came to about .02" or .5mm claearance. I thought they would be smaller. I did drill a small hole in the middle of exhaust side like Martin K's manual shows to relieve bulge stress. There is no scuff marks on exhaust side of piston now unlike the loose stock ones where it reappeared even after I sanded the off.

what do the 4 small holes in the exhaust side of the piston in pic #2 do?
thanks mark

Early TZRs suffered piston seizures from poor oiling. The holes were the solution. A couple of other TZR piston problems surfaced as well. Bulletins/Measure Reports for all can be seen below.

Was reading this post, although I do not own an RZ500 yet.
Just curious, so which is better if given the choice, the OEM 47X pistons or the 99999-02109 package?

I believe the 47X piston part # now supersedes to the TZR piston part #. If you order 47X from Yamaha here you get TZR pistons, which are preferable anyway due to the modifications for better oiling.

The 99999-02109 kit comes with rings. You still need to order wrist pins, small end bearings and retaining clips.

Early TZR250 and all RZ500s use the same bore sizes, piston sizes and clearances.

Keep in mind that 99999-02109 is 0.25 oversize. If you want std bore 56.40 you will need 99999-02108
