Yamaha piston assembly part numbers
Can anyone verify for .25 OS Yamaha pistons, the following part numbers are what I need to order?
47X-11635-00-00 piston only (upper) -
* order rings (47X-11610-10-00), pin (4Y2-11633-00-00), clips (93450-17129-00) & bearing (93310-316C9-00) separately.
99999-02109-00 piston & rings (lower) - (superseded from 47X-11645-00-00 lower piston only)
* order pin (4Y2-11633-00-00), clips (93450-17129-00) & bearing (93310-316C9-00) separately.
Do the rings come with the new lower piston part number 99999-02109-00 or do they have to be order separately as done for the upper pistons?

I have ordered this pistons last week.
They came with a set of rings and were cheaper than the 47X piston without rings!
I have compared it with the original 47X pistons.
The piston pin bore has got 2 holes, i think for lubrication.
There are 4 little holes in the piston skirt at the exhaust side, i think also for lubrication and the top land is a little bit lower.

Now there is a question.
Are the original 47X pistons better than the tdr/tzr pistons or are the pistons i have got from the dealer better than the original RD pistons?
As far as i know there were no problems with the front cylinders of the rd500, just with the rear cylinders (because of the carburetors).

I was just about to put the cast Yamaha RZ500 pistons with TSI spec done to them in to my bike. Willy weighed all four pistons and they are all the same. Would you drill the holes in the pistons as recommended above for more lubrication on break in. I have pushed an old RZ to far during break in and ended up rebuilding the top end. Might this help for my build. Thank You lots !!!!!

Thank you for the replies, subject embellishments and link to ezpezie's ebay ad. I will proceed with ordering the "TDR" pistons, knowing the rings come with them.

Steve is wright about the pistons with the holes on exhaust side = TDR/TZR pistons
they re not so identical as the Rd500 oem ones ,second ring is diffrant (locater pin etc..)
other sizes (icrement of 0.20mm )and tighter clearances needed ,but they can be used for RDs as long the holes are not exposed in the exhaustport .
the rear bank seizures are discussed many times on here , cooling problems ???
the RG500 rear bank cylinders did nt suffer that much despite fully covered by the front bank , so very doubtfull to say only cooilng problems

I talked to Willy and he said that the extra holes are not needed. He also said that I should quit looking for more power on all these sites my bike will be hard enough to keep on the ground allready. Getting very excited and we are three month's from riding weather up here.

These guys are talking about holes on the exhaust side of the piston.
I looked closely at my spare RZ500 cylinders and as long as the piston holes line up with the 2 strips of cylinder wall on either side of the exhaust port, i think they will work out fine. (Looks like they do, but i dont have these pistons to measure.)
Usually holes in the exhaust side of a piston are to cool and lubricate the exhaust bridge area on the cylinder. But the 500 doesnt have an exhaust bridge.
The 2 strips of cylinder wall on either side of the exhaust port on the 500 are quite narrow and i can see how they could expand out with heat and scuff the piston.
So again, as long as the holes only line up with the 2 strips of cylinder wall and dont line up with any ports, i think they would work out fine and be a nice upgrade.

Thanks for that link Steve. The timing here is perfect. I have an 87 2MA that will need a rebuild in a few months. The Yamaha Measure Report, which I was unaware of, has provided some excellent and valuable information. Seems I'll be wanting TDR pistons for my rebuild. exactly , i ve seen them on many bikes already on as well exhaust side as intake side , KR1,rgv, rs ,TZR , as long the holes line up with the cilinderwall or bridged port no need to worry , you can place some yourself there , and they don t need to be drilled all threw the pistonwall ,it helps lubrication penetrating
also pay attention that the ring gaps are not exposed into the boostport or any other port , always keep them lined up on the cilinderwalls , use the clearance that is reccomanded for the piston
i not agree that the YZ ring-locator -pin is better , this type of second ring is more prone to jump over then the original pins from the RD500 ,this type of ring needs tighter clearance

I think i have confused you all
My pistons are also the TDR/TZR pistons with holes on the intake side.
I had them just 5 minutes out of the box and i thought (i wasn`t looking exactly at them) the holes are at the exhaust side because 2-stroke engines have always more problems with lubrication/heat at the exhaust side.
Now i`m confused.
The TDR/TZR pistons need another clearance than the RZ/RD pistons (0,06-0,065mm)? How much?
And they have not the same diameter like the original RD/RZ 47X pistons?
I have not measured them yet - i`ll make this tonight after work...
When they are really so much different, i`ll try to get 2 original 47X pistons for the front cylinders.
Maybe can get some of them when i`m in japan next month
