Rear wet plugs RZV500

#1 Post by dave55 » Sun May 08, 2016 10:31 am

Hi all

Can anybody give me list of things to try to cure rear wet plugs.
everything seemed hunky dory after the rebuild and the first 20 mile blasting and traffic riding.
filled her up to the brim this morning and its run like a pig since then.
rear plugs always the problem, good job it wasn't all round the front two cylinders have limped me home.
Just had all four plugs out and the front two although a little dark are dry, rear two especially rear right oily and wet.

new pistons, rings all round. new float valve kits, set the float heights with a glass gauge type can somebody confirm it should be 1 mm below gasket ? Cleaned out carbs

kicks up first time with new plugs in rear then goes like a rocket and then same happens again after a few miles.
now i have de-restricted it and fitted a standard jet kit all round the only thing i didn't change was the rzv needles.
wondering if its surplus oil in the back crank ?
lost for idea's, new to 2 strokes
Will trawl the posts for clues

Hi I had that problem, bike went great for 10-20 minutes then wet plugs.
I set my carbs as this link http://www.rzrd500.com/500phpBB3/viewto ... ter#p66697" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And check your spark plug caps I had problems with those as well. Many things on our bikes are 30+ years old

Hope this helps / Stinke

Or you just have low compression on the rear cylinders and, thus, poor combustion.

Did you rebuild the bottom end, new (Yamaha)crank seals?
Is it smoking at the tailpipe on all 4?

Thanks for all the tips. Will check them all.
New Genuine crank seals all round, smokes on 4 lovely when plugs are all firing.
Do i compression check cold, hot, engine running?
Will triple check float heights again just don't trust the float
Bowl off method prefer the Yamaha tube. But what's the correct
Measurement for that?

Will report updates

Simply try replacing the plugs as they may have fouled early due to excess assembly oil etc. Cheap possible problem solver.

Im not sure I ever routed my choke cables correctly upon reassembly and ever since I've unbolted my choke lever... I just let it dangle as I noticed uneven pull on the cables while it was mounted in that cockeyed position it's in from the factory
