Check Valves

#1 Post by silverstrom » Wed Jun 08, 2016 10:46 pm

Well, another riding season, another chance to complain about the stock oil pump check valves. I just took the bike out of storage and once again the oil tank level has dropped (a lot this time) because the check valves are leaking. Time for a permanent solution. Those of you that have used the Yamaha outboard check valves 6E9-13183-70-00, are you installing them in the oil lines just ahead of the pump? No concerns using the inline check valves and the stock check valves together?

Anyone have photos showing them installed?

Last year I rode 100 km at high RPM to burn the oil out of the pipes. It looked like an old James Bond movie. You couldn't see anything behind me except blue smoke. I can ride on farm roads here so no traffic to worry about, but it must look like I'm on fire for those that did see me. This year will be more of the same. It's frustrating and now is the time to do something so it isn't an issue again. It's ok when the bike is used regularly, but when parked for a month or more the bloody valves are an issue.

The stock valves tend to stuck open due to dirt, weak/broken springs.
You can disassemble them if you unscrew the brass fittings at the oil pump. But there's a 99% risk of breaking at least 1 of 4 (they crack faster than you can say f...k).

The spring is very light and I feel it wouldn't hurt using additional valves in the hoses.

Not a concern. When I take my bikes out of storage I always turn the engine over very slowly to check for hydraulic lock.

I removed both my pumps during rebuild, One on the pumps was totally gummed up, I removed the check valves and soaked them is sea foam and then squirted brake cleaner back though them, I didnt squirt it directly into them, From a distance, They are pretty delicate, Bolted them back up and that's the pump I'm running at the moment and it seems to be fine..

That's great. Thank you.

Will those valves work with the stock oil lines? Looks like they could be the same valves I mentioned in my first post.

I would think so. I ordered new spring clips for the bike also for the clear lines. They were a little tight but I installed the clip on the lines and pushed the line on with clip in place.

Thank you once again.

You're using both the stock valves and the outboard valves together?

Just ordered the check valves. In stock in Toronto and should only take a few days to get here. $23 Cdn each.

Hi, my RZ has this going on also. I was also considering the check valves. So just to be clear these check valves can simply be installed in line with the original one left in place with no issue?

Thanks guys

I run them both but they were only $7 to $10 each.

Thanks once again.

Parts prices here are much higher than the US. They blame the currency exchange rate, which is part of it, but it's mostly greed.
