replacement carb=new guy screw up

#1 Post by yamahoper » Sun Feb 19, 2017 7:59 pm

My bike finally showed up last night ,an ebay purchase. Add said carbs need rebuild. So I started in on Left side #1 and #2 . No problems on #2 , Number #1 the pilot jet slot was completely gone. I u tubed it and saw a guy drill out the jet, tap in a small square file and get it out that way. Well my file broke off inside then I tried to drill it again and broke that off then tried to hammer a new slot with a sharpened slot screwdriver no luck. Any Ideas out there or #1 carb for sale ? Thanks for any solutions

And for next time, don`t use a file.
A good quality Torx is not that brittle.
And use the biggest torx which is possible.

I have not checked any of the seals. I don't even know where to start with them. The bike does idle fine and has decent power. So I'm hoping they are all good. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking the seals should have its own thread. So back to my carburetor issues.

So The right side carbs didn't overflow at first. I installed the left carbs from Canada with new needles and seats that I bench tested the fuel level on. Everything seemed good, bike started first kick took her for a short ride then The right carbs started overflowing so I pulled them and put new needles and seats in them. Then the lefts started overflowing again so much the fuel was dripping out of the stock air box. Next day opened the drains and closed them... just an occasional drip. Took her for a spin hoping somehow the drips would just go away. They seem to all drip a little left and right when parked, not coming out of the air box but still dripping.
The left fairing was very damaged by the previous owner from fuel leaks melted , warped , and crash damage. No lower mounting tabs all broken off, but I don't know if that's from the crash or fuel damage? The fairing was so distorted the white lines in the paint don't line up with the lower fairing. The fuel tank looks good inside I flushed it several times installed all new clear fuel lines and an in line filter. I'm wondering if the floats can go bad? Also if the drain screws can be leaking ? Not sure what to do next?

Check your float level. If it's too high it will drip fuel out of the drain lines forever because fuel is above the overflow pipe in the bowl. Should be 24 +/- 1 mm.

If the bike is dripping when parked check your fuel tap/petcock. There should be no fuel passage when the engine is off. None.

thanks for the check it again silverstrom ! #1 fuel level was real high and #2 was a little high. still getting a drip from #2 so ill pull them again and recheck. I was actually using the running test with the drain tube pointing upwards but on the bench not running so I'll use the ruler method and let you know the results.

Hi, from my experience this is pretty common. First thing after verifying that the fuel levels are correct is the needle valves. The bore of the needle float valve seat must be clean, like the thing after clean, lol. Below is a link to a video of a guy cleaning these valve seats on a different carb but I'm sure you will get the idea. I have done something similar, I cut some Q tips in half, put them in the chuck of my little drill press. I then put a bit of metal polish on the Q tip, run the drill pretty fast, simply hold the valve insert in your hands and polished the bore a bit. After polishing clean all residual polish compound off and reinstall the valve seat in the carb body.

Silverstorm is correct about the petcock, thats worth a look also.

Hope it helps, good luck!
