Balancer Shaft
Hi,
Having renovated my 500 and gortbit back running I am going to pull the motor and have the crank seals done as whilst the bike starts easy and seems to run nice, it's been stood for a long time and advice from most quarters is to bite the bullit and do them. I the intention is to have the cranks completely checked/reconditioned with new bearings, seals etc!
My question is about the balance shaft and if it usually needs to be redone as well. I haven't seen much mention of it when people talk about rebuilding their engine. Be grateful for any advice or info on it.
Regards
B

Re: Balancer Shaft
What do you mean by re-done?
Some people move it to drive off the rear crankshaft, but all it seems to do is move where the vibration happens, not remove it completely.
I did the mod to mine, then ended up putting it back to standard again afterwards.

Re: Balancer Shaft
I think he means the bearings.
If the bearings are smooth and quiet I wouldn't worry about it. They aren't taking heat and abuse like crank bearings do.

Hi,
Yep, I was thinking if the bearings wear or might need to be replaced when the engine is stripped anyway to do the cranks.

Re: Balancer Shaft
Turn them around, if they turn smooth just leave them as they are.
If you feel some clearance in them thats fine.
One bearing is anyway quite hard to remove because the gearwheel is pressed onto the shaft - it doesn`t make things better if you disassemble pressed parts (same for crankshafts).
As silverstorm says, they are in a much better area in the engine with good lubrication, no heat and also no load peaks.

Re: Balancer Shaft
I've built near 40 engines and never needed to replace any bearings on the balancers.

What about gearbox bearings? Ever had to replace them?

Yes, the large output shaft bearing, about 30% of the time. The large needle bearing on the inner end of the output shaft I've replaced twice due to pitting. Never replaced the other two, always been in great condition.

Re: Balancer Shaft
Would that be these bearings Bill? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/252769282909?ul_noapp=true" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Any opinion concerning this set? That would, of course, be geosot here.

John,
No. I get the output bearing at a local bearing house it's a standard bearing.
