change bearing

#1 Post by shergar » Wed Mar 29, 2017 11:57 am

hi lads , for some reason something in the back of my mind about reading somewhere or it was said to me that when rebuilding a 500 engine to be sure to upgrade to a engine casing bearing with a locator fitted to stop the bearing from spinning when in place as there was an issue with this in the past on the original bearing can anyone advise me on the issue again please as to which bearing ? , the memory is not what it used to be , cheers p

Don't the stock bearings all have knock pins/locating pins?

It might have been crank bearings, see link

That issue involving splitting bearings isn't new or limited to the RD500. I suspect the problem with that centre bearing splitting may have been the knock pin not being properly located when the cases were closed. The right bearing splitting along the clip groove is a reminder that any time you have the crank out you should consider replacing at least the outer bearings.

Not that I can remember. Changing the right outer bearing was a recommendation based on the increased risk of failure due to its design. The bearings have always had locating/knock pins in stock form. Some people have used bearings without pins and in that case you use bearing retainer in the form of green Loctite or similar.

Hi,

I assume its the crank bearings you are talking about. I have read and heard of issues both with incorrect fitting of bearings with pins and use of bearings without pins. Most advise using OEM bearings and seals or if not available good quality items(Typically Japanese) and be careful of cheap pattern parts both in the case of bearings and/or seals. If your bike has been lying up do the crank seals.

Hope this helps

B
