Leaking power valve seals - implications?

#1 Post by RC45 » Sat Apr 15, 2017 8:36 pm

What are the short & long term implications of a leaking power valve seal?

I was planning to run the bike at a track day and then swap frames - and have scheduled the power-valve seal replacement to happen during the frame swap.

So - what is the implication of running the bike hard with a leaking power-valve seal?

I am kind of in 2 minds not to run the bike as I cannot do a pressure test in this state. Upper cylinders held 6psi for 2 hours - so upper crank seals are good, and lower crank seals are same age so should still be good. And the bike starts first kick and feels good and pulls hard (in the neighborhood at least :))

An air leak is an air leak, regardless of the source.

When pressure testing I've had to replace PV seals to stop air leaks.

"Should" can get expensive.

I don't know that you can trust "pulls hard" as a sign that all is well. Remember that your best performance will always be on the ragged edge of lean.

Do you trust it enough to bet your life on it?

True.

And 4 years into the build, what difference does another month make? :)

As I've ridden my 350 for now about 215,000 km you bet I had leaking PV's in any stage from slightly oiling up to excessively increased noise due to exhaust gas leaking through completely loose bushes.

From this experience I take the bet as I know it doesn't hurt your engine.
I partly rode like this for rather long when I was young and the money wasn't there to fix it.
And I never had any failures (except oily shoes) that I could relate to the leaking seals.
So yes, using them "as is" for a track day and replacing them later is save.

I agree on the necessity to check the crank seals beforehand.
If the engine is apart, I'd replace all of them anyway.

Roll the dice. If the leak is bad it'll lean it out and burn it down. If it's minor only then it'll be fine. I've opened engine up to find the oil seals in backwards with oil running out of them and they weren't seized.
