clear pvc fuel/oil lines
I'm getting ready to reconnect the fuel tank and oil tank. What are people's thoughts on using clear PVC for these rather than the normal black hose? I like the idea of being able to quickly verify the presence of fuel or oil but wonder about the resilience of pvc
Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
I have all clear lines and like them. It is getting the right fit on the feed line to pump. Mine had a small leak for a while but installed a better clamp. Also have inline check valves.
Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
check valves between the pump and intake manifolds? What size/where did you source them?
think i'll put an additional fuel shut off after the standard petcock also or else a quick disconnect to prevent the engine filling with fuel

Check valves http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamah ... 70-00.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Extra shutoff is nice but also be sure to secure the line out of the stock petcock. Mine might of been a rare case but the fitting came out at he track and dumped fuel on back tire resulting in a low side.

thanks pstamper. You can see my other recent post

how the fitting came out of mine quite easily. what did you do to try and make this more secure following your incident?

Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
There was a copper o ring on the fitting. Just was wore out. I removed the petcock and installed one from Rick Lance. It was an auxiliary shut off but now my only. I capped the main tank and just run of reserve on tank since it is a track bike.

hi pstamper
a copper o-ring? Here's the fitting that came out of mine. Was your's different?

Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
No extra seal on mine, only something that looks like a bit of glue but without function.
Maybe not fuel/oil resistant.

Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
There is a small copper ring that sets in the groove. Mine was still on the fitting but when I took a pick to the valve assembly it was totally smooth with no matching groove for the copper ring. I will get a picture loaded again of the fitting and ring. People say they JB weld it, but it caused me to low side. Almost was a high side. I took the assembly out on the track bike and have a single inline shut off. On street bike I put a zip tie around the line and factory valve just to be sure it did not fall out and take me down again.

hi pstamper
do you have a check valve in the oil line to each reed block? Is this to prevent oil draining backwards when the bike is standing?. Would one check valve on the inlet side of the pump suffice instead?

Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
The check valve can't be on the inlet side because there is no pressure.
It must be on the out side of the pump to be opened by the pressure when pump is running and closed when there is no pressure ( pump not running ) to avoid leakages.

Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
what is the purpose of the check valves? where can oil drain back to if the oil tank is higher than the pump?
Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
The check valves are in each output of the oil pump.
Otherwise, when the pump is not running oil would flow from the tank to the cylinders because the tank is higher.
A check valve is a little ball of steel pushed by a spring.
The spring is set to oppose the gravity pressure due to the difference of height.
When the pump is running, the pressure produced in the output flow of oil is sufficient to oppose the spring and let the flow of oil pass thru the check valve.
Unfortunately, with time ... one of the check valves may disfunction.
If it stays closed : no more oil, not good !
If it stays open : oil will flow from the tank to the cylinder, not good anymore !

Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
are there check valves in the brass fitttings on the pump outlets?
better try and check that mine are working ok.

Re: clear pvc fuel/oil lines
Yes, they are inside the body of the pump.
