Thermostat choices

After reviewing all the topics on "optional" 50c thermostats, I am still not clear which works better, the Yamaha sled stat (82M-12411-00-00) or the Suzuki RGV250 stat (17670-12C00) in regards to fit when fully open without interference or limiting required flow.

Any feedback on personal experiences with either of these two thermostats would be appreciated. I am at the point of ordering one of these two stats to replace the OEM 65c stat.

Also will be looking to replace the OEM fan temp sensor, which turns on the fan at 105c with one that turns on closer to 95-97c - If anyone has suggestions/part numbers for a replacement temp sensor switch available in the U.S., I'm all ears.

Thanks!

The switch is a standard part, you should get it in every car parts shop from different manufacturers.

As example:

Edit
Link removed, wrong thread dimension.

You should just check if the fan is switched on all the time when the bike is at operating temperature.
It should switch off during normal driving - if not you should go 5° higher with the temperature, otherwise your fan motor will probably have a short life.

Excellent on the temp switch leads - appreciate the help and the full range of part numbers & temp ranges. Thanks again!

After reviewing all the topics again regarding the Yamaha sled stat (82M-12411-00-00) and the Suzuki RGV250 stat (17670-12C00), it appears that folks have stated both of them are 'plug and play' for the 500 and work well.

What I could not find is any verification whether or not at fully open, either one hits the thermostat housing or how much further they open than the original 47X stat (which I believe opens 7mm from static cold). One of the threads I read, someone was going to check the opening amount, but the thread ended without the comparison statistics being added.

I guess I will just order whichever one is more readily available from my local Yamaha/Suzuki dealer knowing that they both allow the engine to operate in a more ideal range for performance and longevity.

I tested my standard switch in oil last week and it doesn't close until 122 degC. However. on the way back down it opens again at the specified 95degC. I tested it several times and it was very consistent

I'm using an R6 (2CO) radiator with no fan. I am going to get the switch to put a light on, on my instrument cluster when the switch closes as a warning for potential overheating but I'll also look into getting one that switches at a lower temp, maybe 100. Didn't realize that was a standard automotive component.

However, mine is M16 by 1.5, NOT M14. The ones mentioned by Speed Freak are all M14. ARe you sure about that size Speed Freak??

Sorry, I never checked the thread by my own because i had no tool which doesn`t leave marks on the hexagon and the sensor.
This part is still missing in my CAD database :smt011
But I had a good idea, with my new soft jaws on the vice I can clamp the sensor and rotate the thermostat housing...

But they should be also available with M16 thread:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/M16-Kuehler-The ... 2197718874" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Edit:
If it closes at 122°C you have found the reason for the bad reputation of the RD500 cooling circuit.
At this temperature the water already starts to boil even in a pressurized system.

Trix - Good catch on the thread size of the fan temp sensor being M16x1.5 !
I had read somewhere it was a M14, but I just removed mine and like Trix, measured it be M16x1.5 - will post back with some possible auto applications that may work, depending on desired temp range.

Not that perfect as before but with the correct thread.
Cut the wires and add the correct connectors.

I`m sure with some research there will be a source for different switching temperatures already with the correct connectors on the part.

In the States, the cars listed below use a M16x1.5 temp switch. Go to http://www.rockauto.com and search under Make, Year, Model, Engine (4-cyl) then "Electrical-Switch & Relay", then "Radiator Fan Switch" - click on "info" for the Four Seasons manufacturer and they will usually state the 'ON temp' and 'OFF temp'.

'87-'88 Nissan Pulsar NX - Four Season's #36502 is ON @ 95c and OFF @ 90c
'80-'87 Subaru GL - Four Season's #36542 is ON @ 95c and OFF @ 90c
'89-'94 Hyundai Sonata - Four Season's #36539 is ON @ 90c and OFF @ 85c

Another reference to get you into different temp ranges is the Tridon catalog, which gives thread size, on/off temps and a good visual of each temp switch, starting at page 189 - http://www.tridon.com.au/flipbook/65969

I just ordered the Hyundai Sonata temp switch (Four Season's #36539) and the Yamaha 82M-12411-00-00 thermostat and will use/install during my rebuild, so it may be quite a while before I can offer any feedback on the operational results. If there are any immediate fitment issues, I will post accordingly.

Thanks again to all who have contributed!

for the UK search on ebay for XEFS67 or intermotor 50331 or just search for a fan switch for a Nissan Bluebird. The temperatures vary; some of them state it in the add, if not, zoom in to the picture you might see the temperatures engraved on the body of the switch You can get them for less than £10 delivered.

I haven't tried the thermostat. I see the one in my bike is marked 50 ℃. I ordered a 90 ℃ fan switch off eBay for £6 Inc p&p. Listed as fan switch 5030.
