Hot Rear End

#1 Post by Linx » Tue Jun 19, 2018 11:56 am

I took the RD out for a thrash last night. Thought I'd make use of the empty roads as the world cup was on. I was making good progress and hit 130 a couple of times. When I got back there was quite a smell of burning coming off the bike. The seat, seat unit, little tray under the seat and upper expansion chambers were all very hot. I was actually worried for the beautiful paintwork on seat fairing, although it looks OK. Is this normal? Or is there something I should check? I did respray the expansion chambers over winter. So the smell could have just been coming off this paint. I've done about 400 miles on it this year. Carbs, YPVS and oil pump all adjusted fine.
Cheers
Steve

Some good roads round your part of the world, next time your hitting 130, point it my way (Northants) and ill meet up with you.

They do get real hot very quickly, after a good prolonged thrashing, mine throws out a lot of oil out of pipes and splatters the numberplate/plate holder but if its all set up as yours sounds to be and the heat shielding around the bike/on the panels is intact and all present, carry on as you are sir...

Sounds normal to me also. The pipes should have been good and clean on the ends. The track bike got hot enough to melt the fiberglass insulation i used in silencers. I use the good stuff now. Great to see you taking it out.

Thanks for that guys. I'll try not to worry about it then. Last year I was getting a lot of oil out the pipes but I washed them out with petrol and hardly getting any now. Just a few spots on the number plate. Sure I'll point it your way Podman [emoji106]. I also want to take it up to Krazy Kat dyno. I suspect it's running rich.

Shame you missed the RD meet we had a couple of months back in Stratford Upon Avon, James (KK) will do a nice job of setting it up if needed too.

Have you changed the silencer packing. If the bike is not ridden hard the material will become oil soaked. Use a good quality material designed for exhaust systems. I think Moose makes a packing product or FMF.

That's a Bugger. I didn't know anything about Stratford meet. Who organized it?The packing in the bottom silencers is rock solid and I don't have any in the top ones.

Did you say no silencer material? Why is that?
