Thanks jackson40!
That should come in handy when I pull my engine out to check the balancer.
The biggest problem I've found is that it seems some engines (two in Aus that I know of) have different/extra markings on the gears, so it makes it very confusing to get it all lined up properly.

Wish I had seen this before I rebuilt my engine.

I also found with mine that when I used the markings shown in this mod, one of my cranks ended up 180 out!
I had both cylinders on each side coming up together instead of diagonally opposed!

When I get my clutch cover off I will take close up shots of my gears and post them up here.

Luther,

You are right. When I redid all that back in 02 I got that picture wrong. Man that thing has made the rounds. last I checked it was translated into like three different tongues.

In the report it states that the 84 model was driven off the lower crank while the 85 was driven off the upper. Mine is an 85 1GE and it is driven off the lower????????

I questioned this mod back when I did my engine and elected not to do it after reading the pros and cons.

I've a '84 47X and a '86 1GE and on both the balancer is driven from the lower crank. I'm currently getting the parts together to rebuild both engines and still not sure if I will do the modification.

first off glad to see Mr. Wilson back and I am convinced Yamaha never drove off the rear crank, a pic was posted not to long ago by Steve ( the professor) and it was the 86 model and even that showed the lower crank driving the balancer, I believe

we have 3 Steve's that qualify as professors, Smurph, Jackson 40 and RGV Steve, I am referring to Jackson 40.

Ok, I've finally had the chance to pull the clutch cover off my engine to put the balancer back to standard and take some pictures.
First picture is the rear crank. When the mark is lined up to the case, #4 cylinder is at TDC - thats right.
Image

Next pic is of the front crank.
Image

The picture didn't come out well, so I had to edit it. If I line the dot on the gear up with the case, #2 is at TDC.. WRONG!
Now when you look closely at the dot on the gear, you can see that there is a cross through it (I have enhanced it in this pic). Someone has crossed it off, and on the other side of the pulley, there is a circle and a "D" shape.
Image

When the circle is lined up with the mark on the case, #1 is at TDC - CORRECT!
So I've lined the balancer circle up with the circle on the front gear.
Image

Anyone else seen this on their bikes?
It may have been these differences that caused the balancer mod to go wrong on my bike.
I will find out how the balance is now once I get some sealant to put the pipes back on and finish it off.
