so doing this mod might not change anything at all

i thought the later bikes that were driven off the other crank had a funny fly wheel on the end aswell to even things out ?
Right on both counts.
The 86 model-last model had the flywheel.
I tried this mod and it made no difference whatsoever so I put it back to normal.
I guess results may vary but I wouldn't waste my time with it if I were you.

Hey, Steve!

Any chance you could repost the photos of the balancer mods for the RZ5?

I had both cylinders on each side coming up together instead of diagonally opposed!

When I get my clutch cover off I will take close up shots of my gears and post them up here.
bought a RZ500 just had been rebuilt with wiseco ultra light forged pistons ( single ring ) and found out both sides of pistons coming up same time , made great power . only way I knew was after changing spark plugs ( after many miles ) , took it all apart just to make sure . no issues with any parts . then put back to standard ( how it left the factory ) .

I had an ‘85 so this was remedied from the factory and never riding an ‘84 myself I can’t say what it felt like. I can say that with my ‘85 using the factory setting oil injection, even with Toomey pipes and matching carb jets manufactured that same year 1985, that fouled plugs were a common occurrence especially at lower speeds (attempting to conform to laws regarding speed limits was always a challenge and the Canadian stock smaller rear sprocket retained). It was a notable feeling with sounds as if something had come loose inside the engine, as if clock parts were added and banging around, sounds of whiiirrr, click, bang... would disappear when the oiled plug was replaced. I can only imagine it was worse with the ‘84 model if Yamaha resolved to make changes the following year.
