I tought it might be useful to separate the R1 topics from my RD500 project topic.
At first a short summary about the bike...
Yamaha R1 RN04 from 2001
Suspension:
- Front standard
- Rear Öhlins with short suspension linkage (155mm instead of 170mm)
- Öhlins steering damper
- PP tuning rearset with inverted shifting
Brakes:
- Brembo RCS19 master cylinder
- Standard calipers and brake discs with Lucas CRQ pads (now switched to Brembo for this season)
Engine (rebuilt 2015):
- Arrow exhaust system
- K&N filter
- RN09 cylinder block
- RN04 shifting mechanism
- RN01 rest of the engine
- Generator removed for flat cover (2017)
- FJR 1300 clutch spring
Everything else standard
Other stuff:
- All useless copper removed from the wiring harness
- Self made fiber glass fairing (really light before I crashed it 4x )
Bike was built up from the frame beginning of 2016:
I`m owning the bike since 2011 or 2012 and had a lot of fun with it.
Since last year I think I have met the limit of this old bike.
On my favourite track I`m only ~4-5sec slower than the track record at the time when the bike was new (today`s track record is 10sec faster than me).
Always fun to play with BMW S1000RR`s when the riders are too slow
After my last season (4x in the gravel) I just put it into my garage and did not touch it up to now.
But I want to the track this month, so I had to pull it out of the corner and do some maintenance.
There I found another weak point of the RN01-09:
And thats the result of it:
I think this damage is not new as it comes from a wire in the clutch which is often lost in the engine.
Since the rebuild none of this wires dissapeared in the engine...
Anyway... I need a new oil/water pump.
One positive thin on this bike: Parts fit from Rn01-09 (unchanged over 6 years production) and this part is available for 25-50€
Just need to find an undamaged one.

During work on the bike I decided to replace some gaskets.
Yamaha prices are incredible... Only what you can see on the pictures below would cost around 70€
and the smallest gasket has the same price as the big oil pan gasket (25€), the clutch cover gasket is the cheapest (20€)...
Quality of the self made gaskets is now also more than just "acceptable"

The ability to make your own gaskets is certainly a good thing. Does that mean we can expect to see some NLA RD500 gaskets for sale soon?
I am the record holder here. I can get from the coffee machine to the TV in 3.8 seconds flat. Years of practice and more than a few crashes.

I`m not working as much as I want.
The plan was to have the track bike ready in spring/beginning of summer.
But as I have not booked any track days I was lazy and we have more or less already end of summer.
Maybe my last track season for 1-2 years...
Also spending too much time doing other things which are not really important like making small foam parts and gaskets by my own
But I have fun trying unusual new stuff.
Bad side of this: There is no progress on the "big" project (RD500) which should be finished by the end of this year.
And there is also my job... Normal day means minimum 12h not at home, standard is more 13-14h.
Not really much time left for my bikes
And when I want to start work for 1-2h in the evening I have to start with cleaning up the garage because I often only throw in things into the garage due to time reasons...
I wish I would have a garage like you John, I guess the 3.8sec record was from your coffee machine in your garage to your TV in the garage
Regarding the gaskets:
As far as I know only one gasket is NLA (lower cylinder reed block gasket) and it`s available from Yambits.
I think the solution with the vinyl plotter is fine for doing 2-3 gaskets, for more I would go for water jet cutting or at least a different plotter (oscillating tangential knife = costs as much as a good car...).
For more than 10 of the same gasket I would use a punching tool.

Seems that it isn`t that easy to get one as the oil strainer often fails and also a cover of the oil pump chain gets in contact with the chain (tolerances).
I have 4 chains and 3 covers - chains all have the same length means no length change over time as they come from engines with different operation time.
2 of the covers have signs of wear on one side which means metal chips in the engine, one is good and there is no contact between chain and cover in my engine now.
I love the simple module design of this engine.
