First roll out of Rainey bike

#1 Post by wolfgangh » Tue Aug 14, 2018 3:15 pm

Hi, we had our first track session last friday with my Rainey bike - thats the one with dry clutch and 119RWHP. We identified a couple of things for further improvement which was the intention of the event, so far the bike only had many dyno sessions.

This is what this bike was built for - pure race. The rider on the photos is 72 years old but an es semi-professional who raced TZ750 and the like in the 70´s.

We ran 4 sessions 15-20 minutes each, the bike was dead reliable except for some potential areas of fine adjustment.

I hate these race bike threads, because there is so much temptation in them .... and it was a tough addiction.
72? I guess that makes me just a kid, but the kids were calling me old when I started racing and was bringing my kids ...

really nice bike.

I hope I will sit on such a bike with 72... or at least one day in my life

Looking at the second picture I would say the exhaust in front of the rear wheel can be a problem at full lean angle combines with a bump in the track.
But from experience the thin 2-stroke exhausts doesn`t lead to a crash if they hit the track, they only have a dent afterwards.

What you see on the rear tire is collected rubber from the track ;)
It gets slippery if it looks like this.
You can see that the "rubber coating" is pushed outwards to the edge where it ends up as little rubber ball for the next one who wants to collect it.
In front of the profile where you have more pressure it is clean, behind the profile there is more of the rubber.

Hard to get this rubber off with such a bike. Needs lap times around 2:10-2:15 on Pannoniaring which would be very very good for a new bike and a 72 year old rider.

Honda CBR 1000 RR SC57

Your observations are absolutely correct. He actually did hit the tarmac with the lower left pipe, its got a dent and scratches. He thinks the rear shock damping is still too hard but we cant go any softer with that shock (from a CBR1000 with softer spring) we will probably get a customized WILBERS shock from Martin Bauer.

The guy usually rides an old R6 from 2003, that day he only did 2:15 with the R6 - maybe because of the heat - his best lap time on the R6 is some 2:08 not too long ago. 30 years ago, he even attneded endurance races on RD500‘s and he started in several world championship races in the 750 class, racing against Cecotto etc.
The know-how which has been put into this engine is mainly his. I only executed and financed the project. Too bad that I am not a too talented rider and too scared to wring such bikes out.

He believes, the potential of my RD500 would allow him to achieve better lap times than on his R6 at Pannoniaring, once the fine adjustments like gearing, suspension setup, carb setting etc. are fixed

"only have a dent afterwards"
from experience, it can cause a very lurid slide, which could result in a crash

Sure, if it sits too low and hits the road hard it can be dangerous. But not as critical as the generator cover of my r1 or the side stand of my CBR600FS...

Story on removng the front mudguard? Was it hitting the fairing / radiator at full braking?

The bike is an inspirational project - always nice to it progress.

No this was for improved air flow to the radiators, engine temp went up too high.

Sweet ride. Good to see a bike being used. Rear tire wear does look a little of. The edge of the tire sipe look different front and back. Little wear on one edge. Good Shock and spring will help a great deal. How was front tire wear.

Also looks like a 190 rear tire. That chain is really close.
