Need Solid Bush!

Re: Need Solid Bush!
My rebuilt project is moving a bit faster now, so I've been able to work on this swingarm joint issue.
I'd like to share it in case it can help anybody.
I've gone with the bronze self-lubricated bushings.
I purchased standard bushings Ø18 - Ø24 - l18, and got them machined to the right length so two of them have the same length as the original plastic thing.
And I pressed them in the relay arms (external is nicely sand blasted now ).
They fit great into the relay arm, but the inner diameter is now slightly too tight for the original collars.
I still have the room for the side seals.
Now I need to have two collars machined in pre-treated steel, to the same dimension as the original ones, except outer dia a very little reduced.

Here we go with the freshly machined collars.
Can't wait to reassemble the swinger.

Re: Need Solid Bush!
Looks good
I still have not decided which bearings I will use...
At least I have a set of both sizes here and a set of 1mm shorter seals which are required when using the wider bearings.
Or maybe I will use one big and one small bearing.
Material for the other modifications is also in my garage and is waiting for machining.
Doesn`t make sense to use needle bearings with the original collars/frame connection design.

Hey Kalim
Reviving your old thread....would you mind advising what material you used for the collars, the ones you refer to as pre treated ?
Thanks

Need Solid Bush!
Hej, I used 110kg pre-treated, so I could use it directly out from the lathe, no need to send for heat treatment. And it has about the same hardness as the original bush. It is a bit harder than required by the bronze collar manufacturer.
Steel grade is 40CMD8, but there are probably many other that will fit.

Re: Need Solid Bush!
Just to let you know, I sent my relay arms off to MCT Suspension in Suffolk (UK). They had a company make up some replica relay arm bushes in a more modern plastic/nylon, and they even replicated the channel for the grease/grease nipple so that they can be lubed up for routine servicing. Since I've refitted them, the relay arms are spot on with no play.
I advised MCT that they may have a few more inquiries so if you want to call them, just mention RD500 relay arm plastic bushes and they can sort it for you.

Re: Need Solid Bush!
Just like everyone else, I had one cracked collar and quite a bit of wear. What I did was quick, easy, and inexpensive. I bought a piece of .750" round 01 steel that is only slightly larger than the original collar. Then I reamed out the original plastic bushes to .750". Next, I machined new collars out of the 01. The ends have to turned down to the original diameter where the seals ride. The 01 can be hardened easily if desired. I did all this within a couple of hours. The only downside to this is you will have to put the collar in the relay arm before the last seal goes in.

Re: Need Solid Bush!
Parts for this project are growing on my desk over time.
Open tasks:
- New paint for the relay arms
- Pressing in the bearings
- Machining of the collars
- Remachining/reaming the frame bores to get them round and to a specified dieameter
- Machining of the new frame bushings
- Nickel plating of all parts which are not made out of stainless steel.

Re: Need Solid Bush!
Reviving this thread as I am getting back to reassembling my linkage and need to address the plastic bearings and worn bushing in the relay arms. Did anyone end up making or finding the necessary parts to replace the OEM NLA parts for the relay arms? I would rather not reinvent the wheel if a solution exists... Thanks!

Parts an desk moved 100km, but nothing else happened...
I have all drawings and the design ready but the priority of this project is low.

Re: Need Solid Bush!
My solution via MCT suspension remains as my preferred route for the plastic bushings.

Hopefully we can get some additional interest generated...!Parts an desk moved 100km, but nothing else happened...

I am assuming the MCT only addresses the plastic bushings, supplying ready to install bushings they have manufactured. Do they also do the steel collars? Mine are fairly worn and I would hate to put them into new plastic bushings, though they are not cracked. Any chance of getting an email contact for MCT?My solution via MCT suspension remains as my preferred route for the plastic bushings.
Thanks to all interested in the solution to this problem.
