Shielding HT leads?

#1 Post by wolfgangh » Sun Mar 11, 2012 5:09 pm

A friend and ex-world championship racer (in the 70´s and 80´s) is telling me that some factory bikes had shielded HT wires (from the coils to the caps) because of negative influence of coolant tubes close to the wires. I cannot imagine that.

Can someone confirm that water / coolant close to the HT wire or plug is reducing spark energy at high RPM?

No never heard of that.
a lot of the older race bike had all the electrics away from the coils as that did effect things like wild tachos ect
we often see all the cdi box ect at the rear of the bike i guess for this reason.

A ht lead is pretty well shielded anyway i cant believe that and the coolant tubes are rubber as well. ok some modern bike use a combination of alloy tubes and hose but i just cant see the problem

Were the coolant 'tubes' made of a type of metal???

I can tell you the current coil/lead cap setup send out a signal strong enough to disable the accelerometers and sensors in a data logger.

Somehow I am thinking the leads/coils are big an mean enough o look after themselves, it is the other gizmo's in the the vicinity you need to shield.
