Coil

#1 Post by silverstrom » Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:24 pm

Am I correct in assuming that the 1986-90 RZ350 and the RZ500 use the same ignition coil? I have lots of them here and they look identical, but have different part numbers. 1UA verses 47X. I assume (once again) that the only differences are the length of the leads (and that is why the two 500 coils have different part numbers as well.)

The 500 coils have a horrible little clamp system to keep the HT leads in the coil housing, if these break you're in trouble (they're not available from Yamaha on their own, so you'd have to buy the complete coil set including leads... and that's if Yamaha still stock these coils), be careful if you want to keep the stock coils as a spare set, because these plastic clamps can become very brittle over time and easily broken.

Being the same coil as the 86-90 350 I'm familar with the tabs you're talking about. Brittle little buggers that snap off if you look at them the wrong way. I've seen them completely missing. Guys just use a little adhesive, silicone, or epoxy to hold the leads in the coil. It works well and I've never seen them fall out. No one can see it, so it isn't cosmetically important. I've never had to do it, but I have lots of coils to choose from.

works really well . nice and small make any leads you want . \

Yep the same coil other than wires and caps.
I read an old post here about it.
Hey you forgot about duct tape. It works wonders too! Lol.
