FZ tach won't work with CDI of the RZ. The FZ is inductive ignition and has different ohm resistance among other things.

You are right about that. I will send it back.

Correct. The 350 and 500 clocks are identical.

If you look closely you'll see that each wire location has a letter beside it. Gray (G) at the top, Black (B) on the left and Brown (Br) on the right when looking at the tach from the rear.

I've had many clocks sets here (and still do) and the 350 and 500 tachs are identical Andrew. Same part number, in fact. If yours was reading at 50% it was either defective or the battery was defective. A defective battery can cause the tach to read low. Had that happen on my TZR 2MY, which uses the same tach.

Was that 350 tach of yours a 10,000 RPM tach Andrew? If it wasn't 10K it wasn't RZ350. The only 10K tachs Yamaha made that were identical to the RZ500 were RZ350 F1/F2 and N1/N2 and TZR250 2MA/2MY/2ME. If it was a 10,500 tach it would be FZ and would rev at 50% of the RZ tach.

Mine reads as though it's in slow motion, it eventually catches up then when I stop and turn the ignition off it slowly comes to rest?

Could be a bad connection or it could be failing. Typically when they fail they just quit and fry the circuit board inside. I've opened them up and found holes burned through the board.
