Coils

Needs some advice on coils. Currently trying to bring the ageing electronics back to life on the RD500 restoration project. The lower coil has suffered badly from internal corrosion and is dead. Amazingly (read on :sad: ) a new replacement was apparently still available from Yamaha so was ordered. Sadly within a day or so I was informed the coil had just gone NLA.

I have read in other posts that the RD/RZ350 coil 1UA 82310-50 should be ok and Weiltronic (cdi supplier) have confirmed the differences in primary and secondary resistance are fine with them so looks ok. A minor complication is the 1UA coil has been superceeded by part 3LC 8231001.

So my questions are; 1) is the 1UA/3LC coil the same physical size as the standard coil so will fit to the bracket, 2) will the plug leads be long enough to reach the far cylinder, 3) is there a better option, for example the pattern coils commonly found on eBay and many other places, 4) anybody got a proven better idea or a good second hand lower coil they would be prepared to part with.

Comments and thoughts welcome.

Paul

The 1UA coils are identical, as is the early TZR coil (1KT/2MA). Only the labels are different. The leads can be replaced, so it won't be an issue. Buy a length of HT lead and make them as long as needed.

Norbo at RDLC Crazy sells coils. Check out his site http://www.microdaddy.co.uk/norbo/html/ ... PVS%20.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have stock 500 coils here if you run out of options closer to home.

Thanks Silverstrom, I will see if Yamaha will sell me a 1UA/3LC coil this time. I had seen the coils on Norbos site (on a few other sites), anybody used them or similar?

There is one big difference with the genuine 1UA coil, it's £64+Tax instead of £98+tax.

I have 1UA, 47X, and 1KT coils and the only difference is the length of the HT leads. The 1UA coil mounts directly above the cylinders and the leads aren't very long. The 1KT leads aren't much better. Perhaps the difference in prices reflects the differences in HT lead length. You pay more for the longer leads. Of course, that is an easy problem to solve.

There is a 1KT coil here and you can see the HT lead length. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/TZR250-IGNITION- ... hm&vxp=mtr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'd buy a fitting replacement for example from here:

As already said the RD350YPVS F2 models share the same coil, but it's a bit of a task to get the very small plastic clips out that secure the HT leads in the coil body. You'd need tgat when exchanging the leads with longer ones.

The world is such small a village!
I happen to know the seller Ralf Punzet personally as we met for a tour over 15 years ago.

Thanks guys, there has been a surprise turn of events as I located a new genuine 47x lower coil yesterday evening (slightly by accident!) and it's heading my direction from CMSNL. Apparently they had 3 in stock, now 2.

They also had some other items in stock that are no longer listed by Yamaha, so will be very happy if the parts do actually arrive.

I know what you mean about the clips MK, I broke a bit off one when investigating the old coil, but when I discovered the coils guts had rotted out the broken clip was the least of my problems!
