No Spark...

Started a special that i am building today and it ran from the kick start after about 5 kicks.

Kept it going for about 5 minutes and then it cut out.

After this it would not go even after using a paddock starter.

Checked the wiring and then did the spark plug check - and NO spark.

Checked all the coil leads and earth connections and all seem ok.

I am now thinking is it the CDI...??

I bled the oil pump and also used 25-1 with the petrol i put in the tank.

Fouled the plugs i thought but they seemed really clean.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Ade

CDI is powered by the alternator, it's worth a check.
No spark on all 4 ?

Only checked the bottom 2 plugs but used a paddock starter on the bike so you would have expected it to fire on 2 if the other 2 were ok.

It did start and then stopped so this is what leads me to the CDI

Also check that the red/white wire is not grounded ( kill switch / ignition key )

Does anybody know if the stator - CDI have to match for a 47X - 1GE etc???

About to do a stator check as i still cannot get spark even with changing the CDI??

Thanks

Ade

The CDIs are interchangeable. The only difference is the ignition curve.

Have you checked fuses?

If another CDI doesn't get you going then it's time to meter the stator. A very simple procedure. If it's good then move on to the next step. If you have no spark on all 4 cylinders you can eliminate the ignition coils, wires and caps as possibilities. There aren't a lot of things that will kill spark to all 4 cylinders. I wouldn't expect the ignition switch to be faulty, but it does happen. I'm assuming you don't have a side stand switch, so that eliminates one more possibility. I don't think the regulator-rectifier will kill all spark, but you might consider swapping it out as well, just in case it is shorted.

Another thing that kills all four sparks is a demagnitized rotor.

That would be an exceedingly rare occurrence.

Fuses, regulator and rectifier aren't in the ignition circuit.

One step at a time.

I know the regulator-rectifier isn't in the ignition system. It's in the charging system. My point was the necessity to verify that the charging system isn't the reason the stator isn't working. A failed regulator-rectifier can burn the diodes out of the stator and it can kill the CDI. So... we check the regulator-rectifier, rather than just keep burning up parts.

Fuses are always the first place to start. I was referring to the MAIN fuse.

Ho yes for sure.
I had one and that was very tricky to find out, that's why I share the information.

Hi

Problem sorted..

Went through everything and then decided to check the pick up

Took the side casing off the stator and noticed that one of the wires from the pick up had rubbed against the fly wheel and had cut through it.

Soldered it up and put it back together, kicked it over with a plug out to check the spark and it sparked and also started on 3 cylinders.

Really happy and thanks for all of the help with this.
