when using a zeeltronic on my 500 build do i still have to use a rectifier/regulator lads ? i also remember someone mentioning a name a bloke that will help out greatly when wiring a zeel , burron or something like that was his name would anyone have it ? cheers ps

The purpose of the rectifier/regulator is not for ignition.
Ignition box has always a rectifier/regulator built-in.
It is for battery charging and power supply of the main harness.
So : No, you don't need it (for Zeeltronic) and yes you need it ...

Rec/reg is not for ignition but for battery charging and general power supply.
So, unless you remove ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ( including powervalves servomotor ... ) YOU ALWAYS NEED a rectifier/regulator.

The stock reg/rec works well and is fairly reliable. Stay with that if possible.

The rectifier turns the AC voltage from the generator (stator-rotor) to DC voltage. Then it's typically regulated to near 14.5V DC for the charging circuit with operating voltage around 12V DC.

If you don't have an original regulator/rectifier, you can use any model providing that it is a 3 poles input with a max amperage higher than the alternator max output ( 16A ).
As John said, 12V regulators nominal output is always between 14,3V and 15,3V.
Original RZ/RD regulator has a max amperage of 25A.

The word "budget" in that description doesn't inspire confidence. If it starts pushing out 20 volts you'll burn up every electrical component down stream of the regulator-rectifier.

If you want to buy a new reproduction part this one from Yambits might be the safest bet. If you want a genuine Yamaha part, the 1986-90 RD350 YPVS uses the same reg-rec, as does the TZR250. FZ600 and more.

Hi Paul , the zeeltronic just replaces the
Standard control boxes , you have to swap
The plugs over so no need to mess with
The loom !!
Have you purchased one already ??

Now that is so Trump-esque fake news that it needs to be honored as one of the best ever.
Hopefully it was intended as a joke. If not, better not buy a Zeel.

Technical background:
The rectifier/regulator turns the AC voltage that comes out of you generator into a load dependent DC of max. 14-15 V. If you don't have one, the voltage chabges polarity and the maximum is much higher.
There are two kind of Zeeltronic CDI's that both need a stable 12V supply and none of them has a build in rectifier.
Borut states a maximum supply voltage 16 Volts and a max. supply voltage for 1 minute of 35 Volts. That means if your genny creates more than 35V and you run it for more than 1min, your newly acquired CDI will be an expensive piece of toast.

The competitor Ignitech states this:
Supply voltage must be within the range from 8 to 18 V. Within this range, the ignition unit is able to optimally control all processes. The ignition unit will be switched off if voltage decreases below 8 V or exceeds 18 V.

It's not stated explicitly, but I strongly assume that higher voltage will damage the unit beyond repair, too.

On the VTR1000 the rectifier/regulator fails regularly and typical follow up damages are a toasted ignition ECU and tach.
