R1 guage cluster help!

#1 Post by 996man » Tue Jan 16, 2007 9:23 pm

Hello, I almost got done finishing installing a 01 r1 guage cluster on my RZ. I got all of the functions to work except for the speedo. I can't get it to work. I have 2 speed sensors just to see if one of them was bad but they bouth have the same ohm readings when I test them. I got the sensor mounted next to the counter sprocket and I'm getting readings when I put power to the sensor and spin the wheel. Now for the guage itself. Could the speedo not work and only display 0 for the speed. When I test the cluster with the power on I'm getting battery voltage for the speedo power lead 13.9 and for the speedo input out of the cluster I'm getting 4.5v. Should this input lead be dead without any volts comming out of it.

Did I accidently fry the spoodometer circut in the cluster? Is thera a way to test the speedometer to see if it works? I'm out of ideas could anybody help??
Thanks in advance. Rafal.

Rafal,

What speed sensor are you using? And what year R1 speedo?

Hello, I'm using the 2001 cluster with the 2000-2001 speed sensor from a yamaha r1 oem part .

Should I be using a different speed sensor?

Thanks for the reply.

No, that one should work. But I have no idea how it should be wired up. How many wires does it have?

I used a cherry speed sensor. Take a look at http://www.rzrd500.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1289 where all of the wires on the R1 headlight harness are defined. You will see that there are two wires that are used, W and L/Y. The third wire on the Cherry sensor is for supplying a ground. (Maybe the R1 sensor uses it's body to supply the ground if it only has 2 wires?) W is the wire that you read 4.5 volts on, right?

The way the speed sensor needs to operate is by pulsing the voltage on the L/Y wire to the W wire. The speed sensor is merely a shunt to ground when a tooth is near it and a conductor when a tooth is not near it.

It's normal to read some voltage on the W wire. Mine read the same thing.

You should be able to check your speedo by rapidly touching 12v to the W wire on the R1 harness (while the cluster is powered up).

Hello, the yamaha sensor has 3 wires. The pink is the input, black/white is the ground and the reddish is the 12v supply.

I just tried to trip the white signal wire off the cluster with the 12v supply and 0. The speedo never registered. I'm thinking it's the speedo. alll other functions work. Just not this one. Also the milage is only 4k and change. Under 5k miles on a 01 cluster. It has to be bad. Any other way of checking for sure?

Thanks. Rafal.

Hook it up to a friend's R1 and check it. That's about the only way I know.

Hello, that's the problem. No one I know has that year r1. There's one more option to see if the speed sensor is ok. I'll hook it op to my 02 and see if it works fine. Than I'll know if it is the cluster.

Thanks. Rafal.
