Re: Plastic spikes snapped off, any ideas
Hi , sorry to ask, anybody know the Yamaha part No for the grommets which fit into the frame , which locate the spikes.
My original ones have perished long ago.

Hi, the back left cowling has a threaded locating point nearest the fuel tank, whereas the rest of them are pointy / spikes. Has any one got a pic of the way the threaded bit locates to the cowling?? ( hope this makes sense!!)
Many thx

I used the same grommets from my Suzuki Bandit. I will find the part #. Just looked and was the lower fairing grommet that is attached at front of engine. Not sure if they are the same.

Working with a Plastex kit right now to make some panel "spikes" - the molding bar makes it a breeze! Highly recommended for those intricate repairs.

Re: Plastic spikes snapped off, any ideas
I make an ABS paste for all fairing repair work. I use ABS welding rods. Cut into small pieces and place in a small glass jar. Cover with acetone and let it sit overnight. Adjust ABS/acetone ratio to get the desired consistency. Easy to work with. Pour into moulds, set cracks, fill gaps, etc.
The paste is far easier to use than Plastex. It's also far cheaper. For the price of one round of Plastex you'll get enough ABS rods and acetone to last a lifetime.
For simple clean cracks line the outside with heavy foil tape. Brush acetone over the inside. The acetone will penetrate the crack and fuse both sides of the crack into one solid joint. Make sure your foil tape is completely flat and well applied to prevent the acetone from bleeding through.
I'm just in the middle of doing 4 sets of TZR bodywork using these techniques. Everything from cracks to 2 inch holes. Once the paste hardens you have fresh solid plastic. White, red, blue and black that match most Yamaha plastic perfectly.
You can also use the rods with a heat gun or soldering iron if desired.
Do an eBay search using "ABS welding rods". Cheap and plentiful.

Re: Plastic spikes snapped off, any ideas
The exhausts side panels are not ABS like the front fairing pieces . Could be PVC , something for sure it's more heat resistant than ABS .
Re: Plastic spikes snapped off, any ideas
I've made these 2 and fixed one to the faring as you can see. Then I offered the panel up and to frame and noticed that the one I had fitted didn't need a spike. Must have a nut glued to it ( no spike? ).
Would have looked better in white but they sent me clear, you won't see them behind the panels. This stuff is excellent Defo recommend it!!!

You are missing this piece that screws to the frame and houses a grommet for a pin.Steven wrote:Hi, the back left cowling has a threaded locating point nearest the fuel tank, whereas the rest of them are pointy / spikes.
