Need Help With Tank Calculation

#1 Post by Smoker » Wed Jan 03, 2018 12:08 pm

Suppose I want to make a tank out of straight titanium tubing.
The tubing is 3inches/76mm OD.
The tubing is .669inches/1mm thick.
I want to make a circle, cutting 12 identical pieces of the tubing.
The total inside volume needs to be approx. 175 cu.inches/2867cc

Can anyone calculate the length of the long and short sides of the 12 pieces?
I was hoping someone has a CAD program that would make it easy.

is this what you are searching for?

Inner volume ("Volumen" is the value you need... :smt002 ):

Wow! Stayed up all night thinking about this idea.

Went to sleep for a few hours, and when I woke up, there it is!

Really can't thank you enough. You're always there when I need help.

After looking at it on paper, I think those dimensions might be good. Have to check a little more.

I don't want to take much valuable time from my bike projects for this, but it seems important.

This drawing is the beginning of the urn to hold my ashes when I'm gone.

True Smoker style. Titanium, of course. Welded construction. Low profile cap on top. Base will probably attach with screws. Machined plates will mount on the front and rear, with designs and engraving. I'd like to polish and anodize the urn; and gold nitride the cap, base and plates.

The machined plate on the front will probably be the Kodokan emblem/symbol:

Anodizing on the urn could be like this:

I think it's looking good on the size.

I want it to be as small as possible, but need to make sure all my ashes fit inside.

The general rule is 1 cubic inch of urn per pound of body weight. Standard adult urn off the shelf is 200 cu.in. I've never been more than 10 lbs over my fighting weight of 156 lbs. Weighed in this morning at 155.9 lbs. If anything, I'll probably lose weight toward the end. I think 175 cu.in. should be more than enough.

Just want to double check the VOLUMEN of 2.867 mm(3) is the same as 2,867cc? :smt017

Each section is 75.92mm on the long side, that's 2.989 inches. I need 12 pieces, so 36 inches.

Of course, the titanium I'm eyeballing is exactly 36 inches long. Will be too short, once the 12 cuts are made. Will need to buy nearly double the titanium. Oh, well- not pinching pennies on this project. Will be good to have extra sections made anyway. Just in case.

After searching for the proper words to respond to your post and the purpose of the "project" all I can think of is this: Always doing things your way Pete...start to finish.

Well, I already ordered the titanium, but there may be a problem.

There's no regulation against using my own urn. But, I just read that the ashes are put in a plastic bag, and then into the urn.

The plastic bag isn't going to go into my urn design. Might be able to have someone transfer the ashes, later. Not sure. Will get back to building bikes while I figure it out.

I was wondering a bit what you want to do with this part on the bike...

I`m not good in finding words for your situation...
So I just hope that I can help you somehow with your project.

2,8671892e+6 = 2,8671892 * 10^6 = 2867189,2mm³ = 2867,187cc

You've already helped a lot. :smt006

Got the titanium tubing.

Hope the thickness is okay for welding. Didn't find much in the size I was looking for.

As the CAD drawing shows, 3 inch ID with a 1mm thick wall.

Sent an email to Unobtanium Welding, but got no response.

If you can't find someone in your domestic market, it'd be an honor for me to do the welding.
I'm not a pro, but tried Ti before and it wasn't that complicated.

Well, I'd be honored to have you do it.

I was trying to get a super pro welder like Chris at Unobtanium or DimestaK, but it's always more meaningful when the help comes from friends.

Working out the best way to cut the wedge pieces. Also need to figure out the threaded bung and how to cut the bung hole. :smt003 Will ask the local machine shop about turning a custom bung.

I know someone good that does water-jet cutting. I'm going to get his opinion, too.
