Being a track bike I didn't need/want a key lock in the gas cap. It is a keyless screw in alloy cap.

As it was, the key that came with the bike only opened the gas cap - the bike had long ago lost its ignition key by the time I bought it :)

I currently have a TZR250 1KT tank on the bike.

Mounting is taken care of by welding a receiver similar to the TZR250 frame, so the tank hooks on and is fastened at the back.

Will post photos in a couple days.

The TZR tank looks very good on the RZ.
What do you do for a front mount? The TZR tank mounts to 2 large locating dampers with a mount bolted to the frame and 2 large hooks under the tank.

Yes, the tank and frame did need a little massaging.

I like the look the 1KT tank has. Fits the bike nicely as well.

Of course there is still the other option - just weld in a tank throat from another bike and bolt on a key-less tank cap I bought this RZV500 tank off another RZ500 Forum member with the fille cap already welded in.

I have 3 (1KT) tanks here and was considering using one on the RZ500 project bike. The info you've provided shows it is likely too much work for what I have in mind. I don't plan on using the stock airbox, so that may allow me to use a TZR front mount bracket to get around the problem, or perhaps fabricate something similar to get the same result. Whatever I do needs to be easily reversible. Love that modified 500 tank. That is a nice mod.

Yeah, the reason for the complex rear mount (the 1KT tank had to be trimmed) was so that I could switch between the RZV and 1KT tanks.

The smaller 1KT tank is the sprint tank and the bigger RZV can server as the enduro tank :)
