A lot of info and details are of course still under wraps, but I will share this much.

If this unit is the candidate I believe it is for full operational restoration, the idea is at some point to use the engine as a blueprint for producing components to allow others to have a definitive path to the elusive "super tuned RD/RZ500 engine".

Of course there would need to be enough folks willing to stand inline for any special parts that such a project birthed.

But I don't want to get ahead of myself - first step is a cloned YZR500 :)

It's a sign... albeit a very expensive sign...

Unused OW98 tank located. :) It is close to the OW81/86 profile, but may need to be altered for exact correct appearance.

Only works rear shock, frame and swing-arm to scrounge up now

Works engine negotiations, research and due diligence discovery going well.

It is so close I can almost smell the Castrol A747 :)

Exciting stuff. Getting more details on this engine - all current indicators are it is an almost brand new, pre-season test unit that was set aside waaaaaaaaaaay back in late 1987.

Now working out a final price and shipping details.

If ever a frame and swing arm needed to appear, now is the time LOL

Hopefully there is one stored under some guys workbench that he forgot about and it will be discovered by his grandson very soon :)

Thanks, there are lots of loose ends to tie up to get this done smoothly.

Probably - but its weird to even think how some of these parts get saved, horded, put away and then how they suddenly appear again.

Sometimes you try for years just to find a piece that is close enough to fill in for a rare setup --- and sometimes you get to pick between a few so you can get exactly the model/version you need.

Tank has no baffle plates - just a huge void.

And at 1.58kg (3.48lb) it is the lightest fuel tank I have on hand. The TZ250 3AK is 2.1kg and is smaller

do you think they use fuel foam ?

just seems a lot of weight sloshing about

Interestingly I have never seen any early GP tanks with baffles. I know foam was a big thing in TZ and RS privateer camps. Maybe the factories might have used a much more expensive and fancier foam :)

Just got an early 1990's YZR250 tank in. It has a bunch of degraded tank foam still inside.

It is a very coarse open cell foam similar to other fuel tank foams I have seen.

Also in the box of goodies where a set of very good condition take-off works YZR500 front brake rotors - complete with magnesium rotor carriers.

3170g for the pair vs 3340g for the pair of works aluminium carrier rotors. Only an 85g weight savings per rotor carrier, but it is all the "only 80g here and 50g there" savings that eventually add up to 110kg 500cc GP bike LOL
