Have you considered making a composite tank and fitting it with a bladder (from say ATL)?
Also, have you investigated 3D scanning more complex shapes (cases, cylinders, fuel tanks)? It isn't pocket change, but it doesn't look like budgetary contraints are an issue. Awesome work, good luck with the english wheel.

No composite tanks here. I want a pukka aluminium tank :) I figure how hard could it be? ;) LOL - take some metal, form it into pieces, weld up a swingarm, frame and tank - and voila, a real imitation YZR hehehe.

And I have tried to work with some 3D scanned objects and the amount of time it takes me to clean up the complex technical shapes seems to be no less than if I draw he shape from scratch.

Now having said that, I do have some software that I need to learn how to use properly - it is for 3D imaging objects using an array of images - the results are visually stunning, but not always easily converted into technical 3D images that can be CAM'd for CNCing.

The period correct real YZR front end takes shape :)

Wow, you're really getting into this modelling lark. Brilliant.

Slightly off topic, but reminds me of Japanese guys attempt to CAD model and the 'print' a 1/12 replica of a Honda CBR1000RRW

Ade, I just measured mine, Its roughly 59mm and 97mm spacing on my sprocket carrier,
Its for a Rear BST carbon wheel

Mine are exactly the same

What carrier did you buy for the wheels? BST?

For the BST wheel, is the cush drive receiver bolted to the hub?

It looks like the cush drive system is a lug bolted to the sprocket (and carrier) that plugs into a rubber donut housed on the cush drive receiver that is mounted on the wheel.

From everything I have seen so far, the factory YZR used a donut with an embedded bolt that is bolted to the sprocket that then plugs into a receiver hole - that was either machined into the wheel or machined into a receiver bolted to the wheel.

This system then became the standard for TZ250's starting in 1991.

Gents, don't forget to post photos of the brake side of your YZR rear wheels as well as the sprocket side...

Thanks

Paul

Ronnie, would you mind taking some measurements of your YZR500 rear wheel?

I would love to know the rim width, hub width (with and without out cush drive receiver), hub width from center to the brake disk face and from the center to the cush drive face, axle diameter and bearing part numbers sizes.

A picture of the brake side would be great as well.

Paul.
The wheels are boxed and stored up in my loft. I'll try to get to them over the next few days and take some measurements.
I have one pic of the brake side already. I'll post it shortly.
Thanks.
Ronnie.

Thanks for the photo and detail.

The wheel appears to be from the later era when the YZR500's started adopting the YZR250 and TZ250 practice of only using 3 bolts to secure the rotor carriers front and rear. If you want a floating rotor, then I can draw up a rotor carrier for you - then you just need to get a rotor cut locally and have the carrier CNC's by a local shop.

The early era wheel that I need looks like it used some sort of lugged adaptor that went between the rear rotor carrier and the hub, rather than bolt directly to the hub. I have yet to find a detailed close-up photo of how the rear carrier attached to the rear wheel hub on the early wheels.

I have found some pit lane photos with wheels all around leaning on against the wall, but they are all leaned up with the sprocket side out - and when they are brake rotor out, they are black wheels and the detail is lost.

I have managed to get hold of the Ridersclub/1 and Ridersclub/12 1985 magazines with the superb detailed articles ont he OW70, OW76 and OW81 - including detailed frame photos of the OW76 frame, and although this is a wealth of visual information, with many perpendicular photos allowing for good measurements, there are still a few missing pieces of visual info regarding, suspension linkage, rotor and sprocket carrier and internal frame/swing arm dimensions.

Even all the detailed photo studies in the Pitwalk Photo Collection and the Racers magazines can't deliver all the details needed.

This one of the better photos (from a 2015 interview by CycleWorld with Lawson during a Yamaha 60th Anniversary event) that helps fill in some of the missing rotor carrier, wheel and sprocket carrier details, although this bike appears to be using a later OW98 wheel with a wider hub.

Maybe I need to send Mr. Lawson a letter and ask if I can crawl around the OW81 in his study and take photos and measurements :)

I got to meet Eddie a few years a go(see link)and asked him to join the group, he still has a RZV500R

For me the devil is in the details - if I was not so OCD I would have had a running replica up a long long long long time ago :)

I think I am close to getting the sprocket/rotor width correct. Not sure about the offset though. Without taking a measurement off the real bike I am hesitant to place the final order for the Marvic wheels. On the other hand, once the rear axle assembly width is settled a lot of pieces will fall into place.

This is what we are working towards
