Finally Started working on My Own Project....

#1 Post by WVWRZ500N » Mon Mar 11, 2013 11:53 am

Hello Fellow Club Members and Future Club Members:

Well I had mentioned in an earlier post I was looking for some parts to begin my own bikes restoration.

After 12 years and over 30 RZ500 engine builds for my clients I finally decided to try and tackle my own project.

I'm really too much of a perfectionist in areas and that has been my limiting factor in getting started. Just want too much of myself and it's a big job as many of you have done.

So in between work on clients projects I've managed to put together the 'roller'. The overall plan is to do a complete mock up of the bike using spare body and engine while getting all the fasteners, brackets, springs, etc that will be used on the finished machine sorted and mounted properly. Once the 'complete mock up' bike is built I can then take tons of pictures and then slowly remove said brackets, fasteners springs, etc and box them according to the plating color or paint color I want them to be. I have a local plating company that will do cadmium I and cadmium II for reasonable flat rate. A 3Lb coffee can of bolts, nuts washer, brackets is $125.00. Which is about the entire bikes worth of stuff.

Frame, subframe, birdcage, rear sets and wheels all to the painter. My bodywork and tank are either OEM new or near perfect originals so no body painting other than the front FZR fender.

So that's the idea. Maybe a little different than what others are doing but thats what I've got.

Will post pictures and components later.

Why not just buy a box of assorted length 6mm and 8mm bolts new?
They are pretty decently priced. Nobody sees them under all that bodywork anyway. What wheel are you using on the back of the bike?

Colin,

Thanks for in input.

It really goes back to my perfectionism disease. Even the covered stuff has to be exactly like I want it or I won't do it.

Think about it, I port engines. No one ever sees my work, they feel it in the throttle, but never see it. If it's not right inside the engine I'm not finished with it. Same thing with the fasteners and all that.

Hello Fellow Club Members and Future Club Members:

Here are some of build pics so far. I need to take more after tonight as I got the bird cage back on, rad, oil/water tanks and brackets.

Please remember this is just the mock up, not a RAT bike in building here.

A decent idea of what I've been thinking other than the silver frame, inverted forks, banana swinger and Lomas pipes is here: http://www.rzrd500.com/500phpBB3/viewto ... 13&t=10523" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ok here we go:

- 1988 FZR750R forks fully reworked by Lindermann Engineering
- 1989 FZR600 front wheel
- 320mm EBC Pro-Lite full float discs
- '99-02 R6 front brakes
Image

- RG500.com High Capacity Radiator
Image

Image

- Toomey exhaust just until I build my own.
- R6 Brembo rear master cylinder
- '99 CBR600 F4 Rear wheel, caliper and brake holder
- OE swingarm gusseted below
Image

-520 Chain and Sprocket conversion
Image

- Contemplating how I want to cut the rear side panels and tail to give it the sleeker look.
Image

I figure I'm about 75% mocked to then get to tear it back down depending on if I'm gonna cut the side panels or not.

Once I'm all done most of my non essential spares will be up for sale too.

Awesome. I like that you are using alot of proven mods and affordable mods and every one is for an improvement to the machine not just bling. ie 17 inch front wheel, wide rear tire, cooling the rear end, better brakes...
What size tire do you figure you will use on the rear?

Colin,

I thought I answered this earlier but it wasn't there when I came back.

So, it fits a 180 rear. The rim is 5.5" I believe. I did the fit several years ago and used the original chassis as my dyno/break in mule. It was a nightmare to fit also. Took me hours figuring out the centerline of everything then to know how much to remove or add in spacers. It's all good now though. Only have to weld on a lug on the swing arm for the brake stay to 'lock' to.

Hello Fellow Club Members and Future Club Members:

So I'm already waffling and it's only been a few weeks since I started. This disease is completely debilitating at times, at least for my own projects.

So, I'll ask the audience a few questions. Please note this is not a stock bike, the looks are not original, paint scheme will be but otherwise nothing else.

So:

- Brake line and fitting colors: I'm leaning toward transluecent red line with gold ends. (See http://www.spieglerusa.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; then look at their color choices).
- Going to try and carry the Gold (yellow) of the calipers through the bike front to back. With that I'm considering Cadmium II (gold colored) to replate the footrest hanger and drag pin on the peg end (OEM it's chrome and cad I) and then maybe some more as part of the rear brakes.

Thoughts?

Paul,

Thanks for the input. I'm not a GSXR owner, like some of them but never owned one.

I think the disease is going to get the best of me here though. I bought the colored tires a while back for the project too. Red back tire, blue front.

So it'll look something like this.

Keep in mind the frame, wheels and rearset mounts will have the prism effect in the clearcoat as well.

It is a bit of a Christmas tree I suppose.

Hi Bill,

That's amazing !!!  - I see that there is no hope for you colour wise !!

The most important thing of course is that you like the finished result.

You are pulling my leg with those colours though aren't you !!?? - I had to check if it was April Fools Day or not - but it isn't - so I'm slightly worried - ok - very worried - please tell me you're pulling my leg ?

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on this bike - I know it's going to be a good one really !

Cheers
Paul

Paul,

I agree it's a bit different, but so am I. Never liked having anything anyone else has even if it wasn't the norm. That's one reason I ride twostrokes in a world dominated by four pokes.

The tires are real.

Its not going to work. You will hate it. I`m sorry it has to be said.
No yellow
No gold paint
No blue
No translucent

What do you have planned for the engine color?

Colin,

I was hoping to save the engine color as a secret, but since you asked. It is the red of the bodywork. I already have it painted also.

The gold is the cadmium II plating, same as the brackets on the oil pump, most of the frame fasteners and some of the carb fasteners. All the rest are cadmium I. No gold paint.

Here's the finished waterpump.

This is what happens when you post things on the internet.

I am serious. I don't like anything like anyone else. I appreciate the talent it takes to build a 'replica' or sort a bike to make it completely original but that is not me at all. Way too many 'replicas' and 'originals' out there. I want something unique, flashy, stands out. It might not be the thing everyone likes but those who do will appreciate all it took to build it. I'm not a purist Yamaha guy, or GP fan. I like motorcycles, I love two strokes and have been envisioning this project for the last twelve years. In that time I've been raising three great kids, working a full time job and running WP. I've spent hundreds of nights laying in bed dreaming of the way I wanted the bike to look.

I like things no one else has be it in color and performance. No offence to anyone on this board that has a 'replica' but what's the point if you don't have a motor to go with it. For crying out loud most of them still have factory carbs! At least Wyn's bike was ported with 28s on it.

Yes the tires are very real. Here are some examples:

http://www.sportbikes.net/forums/attach ... ace02.jpeg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/fl ... 005039.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The tires were made by Tomohawk http://www.motorubber.com/pages/Rides.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I'll agree they are not for everyone but two each his own.
