Just realized, I need to make sure titanium nitride coating doesn't get in the relay arm bores. Normally, it does coat the inside during the process.

New problem: The relay arm walls are not very thick around the bearing bores. If the relay arms are coated on the outside with titanium nitride, will the TiN crack when the bearings are pressed in (or some time later) from expansion of the relay arm walls?

Does the bore expand or does the bearing shell contract, or both? :smt102

I could help you with your swingarm but I have deadlines for the Barry Sheene memorial in March next year, which means I prob wouldnt be able to do anything until after April. Not sure if that would help you considering your time frame etc....
Time flies!

I should look into CAD drawings for the R6 axle adjusters - just in case.

When the CAD drawings for the relay arms are done, I'll start looking for someone to machine them.

Haven't seen nickel plated Brembos on an RZ, so I picked up a set. Took this pic today:

I think the drawing is done for the relay arms. Just need to check the numbers and figure out how to download it and send it out for estimates. The drawing was done using onshape.com.

Sent the CAD drawing to a couple of machine shops.

First place that came up on a search was emachineshop.com

Don't know anything about them. They got back to me fast with an estimate:

We are pleased to provide the following quotation:

File: Part_Studio_1.step
Quantity: 2
Material: Titanium, Grade 5
Finish: none
General Tolerance: +/- 0.005"
Turnaround Time: 20 business days (excluding transit time)

Total job price including UPS Ground shipping: $339.98

Are you happy with that cost smoker?

It would cost more than that to have 1 made in alloy here.

If they quoted just on the .step file and not the drawing I would recommend you verify that they will hold the drawing tolerance on the bearing bore, it's about a tenth of the general tolerance quoted. That might increase the cost. Still, it's a pretty neat setup, I might give them a try for some of the small parts I need. It would be nice if their software allows importing existing 3D so the pricing function can be used without having to learn another system.

If that includes the titanium, it sounds reasonable.

I could get it cheaper for sure, but there are tight tolerances for the bearing. Not sure who has the best machine to get it right.

I'll definitely send them an email asking about the bearing tolerance. Thanks!

The original parts were made over 30 years ago on mass production machinery and they probably only checked every few hundred parts. The numbers seem small if you aren't used to it but you aren't breaking new ground with this. Any machine shop worth dealing with should be able to cut a hole for a bearing to the right size, a retired machinist with a 30 year old Bridgeport in his garage could probably do it.

Just waiting for a couple more responses from different machine shops.

I can loosen up on the tolerances, if necessary to get it done.

Since my local machine shop is too busy to cut my parts, I've tried a guy ( Mike in Massachusetts!) who has made a few parts for me. He doesn't work with titanium, so he asked other people he knows - and got a taker. His name is Dan, not sure where he's located. Dan said he saw the tolerances, and has a plan to hit it. I think the price is around $339.00 plus shipping.

I gave the go ahead. Waiting for more info.

EDIT: OOPS!! The new estimate is only for the machine work, no titanium.

Might have messed this up - not sure, yet.

I bought this titanium block to make both relay arms, but in order to use it - the block needs to be cut at this angle. After making the cut, it looks like some areas might only have 2mm of extra material, plus it might be more difficult to machine a wedge-shaped piece of metal.

So, I may have to buy more titanium and eat the extra cost. Not a disaster. I think the block of titanium I have cost about 50 bucks.

The cost estimates don't seem unreasonable, based on other parts I've done.

The (12) titanium axles and swingarm pivots I had made were almost all different - all one-offs. The cost of machining was around $150 each and gundrilling around $80 each.

I don't think I'll need many more titanium parts for the 500, just the hardware and a few bobbles.
