Practically downtown. Hard to believe it was only about 5 minutes off the interstate in a very nice older neighborhood. Smaller homes with an alley in back for garage access. Reminded me of other small towns in the midwest. Looks like a couple guys just buy and sell bikes. I wish I could have gotten it from the previous owner. Gotta bet they made a buck or two.

Well I have made some direction decisions.

As I said, I will be moving my Canadian RZ500 from Wisconsin to Georgia the end of November. Since moving the bike from MN to WI I have decided to use R6 forks and brakes and an R6 swingarm, which I just picked up for a song. On Sunday I landed an RZV frame on Yahoo Japan. I have a friend who is going to have some unusual "luggage" on a trip back to the US. I haven't decided on wheels yet, but I want to do some research on light weight offerings. If I need to continue on my low cost quest, pairs of R6 wheels are plentiful.

I stumbled on a thread that told about the different parts needed for using the aluminum frame on a steel framed donor but I couldn't locate it again. I guess my search skills need a little refining. If someone knows of a good replacement parts list thread, I would appreciate the info.

Thanks everyone for their input, Frank

I have a never registered/ridden RZV500R which I plan to sell some time next year. It's not in "just out of the crate" condition but it's very nice. It actually was in a dealer's shop window for about 26 years before the dealer decided to sell it. If anyone is seriously interested, please send me a PM for details.
I was at a really small dealer in Japan about 20 years ago and he had an RZV in the window. I stopped and talked with him for a while but my Japanese is basically non existent. I was staying in Hamamatsu and working in Iwata, so I bet the dealer was somewhere in between.

So after reviewing the 51X parts differences, I believe I am in pretty good shape.

Looking at photos, it appears my frame has the two rear Engine Mount Brackets and also it still has the rear suspension linkage mounted so I should have the shock linkage bolt.

I think I will NEED the
Regulator Bracket 51X-21287-01 and maybe the
Coil Bracket 51X-21359-00?
Side Stand Bracket 51X-27321-00

On the WANT list would be:
Rear Brake Pedal 51X-27200-00-39
Rear Brake Pedal Return Spring Post 90109-082A0
Shift Lever 51X-18111-00

I suppose I might end up with other rear sets of some type as well.

I may have to make the above brackets, but if I could find them for sale, that would save me some work. If anyone sees flaws in my plan please comment.

Thanks, Frank

I have found a nice set of 17" wheels for sale, but the rear is 6" wide not 5 1/2 to match my R6 swingarm. What would be the disadvantage of the 6" rim? Would I have to run a 190mm width tire or would a 180 work?

Thanks, Frank

The problem is chain clearance. I run a 5.5 inch to clear

This week has been very exciting for me. I bought the well used RZV frame on Yahoo Japan some time ago and had it shipped to a friend of a friend's house in Japan. Last week Friend #1 Kyle-san was in Japan on business and packed up my frame as luggage for the trip back to Georgia. Delta brought my suitcase for $200, it wouldn't fit in an overhead bin lol.

Uncrated my suitcase and I am pretty happy with the frame. The rear section has been modified, but I knew that from before purchase photos.

Image

To get get under the max size for "luggage" Kyle cut off the sub frame and tucked it inside.

Image

Sitting back in proper location the package looks like this. You can see the square tubing added in place of the original bracing from the seat rail to the back of the SA pivot casting.

Image

From the top you can see additional brackets that will need to be removed, but I think all the originals still exist.

I need to dig out all my parts and start a project thread once I get going. I want to investigate the R6 swing arm pivot area to decide what pivot bolt to use. Because I need some welding already I am considering modifying the pivot castings (on the frame) to use the R6 axle. I haven't even looked inside the R6 arm yet, so that may be just crazy talk.

That should work. I guess the nice part about the sub frame being modified is that there is no need to be squeamish about any other mod you want to make to the frame? I have my RZV frame in a mock up state now. If you need any sizes or pic's let me know.
