This filter requires the use of a Mad Beaver kit to create the flange for the filter to mount to. Without the replacement carb flange plates, the filter is useless. Do you have such a kit and are looking for replacement filters for it? Are you aware of the jetting issues involving the use of open filters with stock RZ carbs?

Some crud from the cleaned out :smt011 fuel tank seems to be getting in to carbs and fouling the float valves. Had to remove right side carbs and clean the junk out. They are holding for now.

Wilson filter kits arrived about a week ago.

Other side mounted the backing plate.

Then took it off to install M6 inserts in both sides.

I finished the install with M6 SHCS. But then ordered M6 x 50 button head screws (to replace the SHCS) and spacers to finish again. Spacers may not be required. Final pic will follow after polishing the new screws.

I am anxious to butt dyno the bike with the new filters. :D

Looking very good Ken.

Did you run the bike with the pods? Tuning issues?

I have plans for a naked 500 and the filter issue is something I've been pondering for a while. I have the Mad Beaver pods and I talked to Dale, the guy that designed and sold them, and he told me tuning for bottom end was always an issue. I've seen similar kits to Bill's that you've just installed and will watch your thread for tuning reports.

McMaster Carr M6 x 50 Button heads and spacers arrived.

Completed air filter installation with 1.5 inch spacers in between sheet metal parts.

Need to install fairings and test ride.

Yes John, I rode it with the pods for 6 - 700 miles. It ran pretty good. I'll report back after the next ride.

A little break in the much needed wet weather Monday allowed for a little ride on the bike. Went in to town to fill up with gas, and then out to the country to let it rip. I really wanted to open the throttle to butt dyno with the new filters on. Hit a nice straight away and began opening the throttle and it did not feel quite right. The throttle was hanging up, some sort of interference. I could keep opening it but it felt like it might stick in a certain spot. Pulled over and I could see that the throttle pulleys were hitting the rear of the air filter backing plates.

So I rode back home to remove the fairings for the ten billionth time, pulled the air filters, ground the little tab on the pulleys about 1/16 of an inch. No more interference.

Synched the carbs again with the manometer. Then put it all back together.

This was the first time out on this bike in quite some time. I happened to notice a lot of sticky goo on the swingarm, wheels, etc. Very messy stuff. :smt009 I had put a new chain on the bike and the sticky messy goo was the chain factory lube spraying all over. :smt010 When I installed the chain I thought that stuff would stay on the chain so I left it on. Cleaned up the mess and cleaned as much lube off the chain as I could.

Ready for the next ride when the weather clears. :smt023

Ken,

Glad you're getting the thing going. Strange that the prototype didn't hit my carb set but your's does. Good to know though as I can recommend that slight touch with a file when folks are installing.

Look good! Thanks again for the help in R&D!

Very much just a slight glitch.

I should have twisted the throttle when I first put the backing plates on to check for interference. Hindsight is 20/20.

It was great working with you. :smt023

Today I put the gold tuning forks on the tank. It took me about an hour to decide placement.

Image

I was able to get someone to cover oncall duties for a couple hours so a short ride in beautiful 70 degree weather sure was nice.

Some local phone photos.

Had to do about 100 yards of dirt riding to get this one. I think the blimp will be heading over to the Super Bowl in Santa Clara shortly.

Oh yes. The bike ran really good with the new air filters on.

i only rode about 40 or 50 miles. When i did twist the throttle hard it felt great. :smt001

Need more seat time.

Ken,

Really turned out fantastic! Great to hear you like how it's running with the new filters also.

Well done. Now to enjoy the hard work.

Sweet ride. I like the chrome pipe with that color. You did a nice job.

Thanks for the compliments fellas! :smt006

Pipes are electro polished SS (not chrome).

I can't remember if I whined about this before…

Every time I ride this bike I get exhaust goo all over the backend. When I get back home it's about an hour of cleanup with WD-40 then waxing the painted parts. :smt010

I had previously removed and regasketed one of the silencers couple of times because I was getting a lot of spooge on one where it mounts to the pipe. But it continues to goo up. This last ride when I cold started the bike I took a moment to go look at the back end and the silencers. Both of the lower silencers were blowing exhaust out of the center of a few of the rivets that attach the band to the carbon fiber tubes. I could literally see the blue smoke pulsing out of the rivet holes. This sprays exhaust goo all over the swingarm, the rear wheel, kind of everything on the backend. I suspect the two short silencers might have the same problem but did not look at that very closely (yet).

I have contacted Jim Lomas and he replied promptly stating that they use blind rivets that should plug up the holes. He has offered to send replacement rivets or for me to send him the silencers and he will rebuild them. Seems fair enough. I have requested replacement rivets. In the meantime I am going to plug some of the rivet holes with JB weld or something. But first I need to clean the holes out.

Any recommendations on what to use to clean the little holes out without damaging the finish on the carbon fiber?

I think I will try spray brakleen after work today. Very carefully.
