PHOTOBUCKET

Everyone having same issue with photobucket. They are wanting a subscription at over $300 a year to post pictures. Like they are holding you hostage, or should I say your pictures.

I was paying about $30 usd per year for a Photobucket Plus account. (Too many pics for a free account).

For the same service, I would now need to pay $399 usd per year.

Seems like a ridiculously greedy increase in price, without any warning.

I could afford it. But it feels like a big rip-off.

Fuck photobucket.

The issue is all my photos I use are there. In order for me to still use them they are charging the price. Not like I have 1000s of photos. They are all over the place on forums so you have no idea what was taken. Pay for usage not one price fits all that want to post to a third party.

This latest bullshit puts Photobucket one step closer to irrelevance. It won't be long before they cease to exist. Their site has been shit for the past year. Good fucking riddance, I say.

Download all of your Photobucket files and find a smarter hosting site. Some have switched to imgur.com. Drop Box is another option I've heard about. I'll be switching soon while waiting for those Photobucket twats to fuck me over.

I still think the simpler solution is to make use of attachments here. Perhaps expanding the capabilities of that option needs some exploration by the forum ownership.

The only thing worse than being strong-armed is capitulating to it.

Thank you for the last statement. It again is like TV. I would love to pay for what I use or watch. I used an antenna but did not like the lack of flexibility. I will start to investigate. All my motorcycle videos are same track but the images that do help some people are no longer available in the appropriate spots. Will talk to more tech savvy people on a good solution. Might start with Blair that does all the track images for our track group.

Just got an email from PB saying that I need to upgrade to their Plus 500 plan. I expect my photos to start vanishing shortly.

I just downloaded my photos from Photobucket to my office computer. When they kill my links I delete the account.

I posted this on the 350 side...

I think I will just continue this thread rather than start a new one. Although all the photo bucket photos will be forever lost, and unfortunately the photo journalism associated like "the deer and the fish story" :smt022 , there is still some extremely valuable content :smt005 , i.e., like YouTube videos.

So yes, I am switching to imgur for now, but how long before they do the same thing as photo bucket?

Regarding the photo bucket debacle, I am not surprised that they would switch to "paid" third-party hosting. However, the $399 fee was over the top. I may have paid $50 annually or something like that, but not $399. They probably have gotten a few subscribers, but IMO they would've gotten 10 times or 100 times more if they would've made the fee reasonable. I believe it's too late now, people have been chased off and are angry about this ransom. Too bad for them. I wonder if photo bucket will survive?

Here's a question for you smart people, why the fuck can we just buy a domain to host our own photos that has all the code to embed them in forum posts? Hmmm, why? That's what I want.

Here are imgur posting instructions from an imjur forum post:

This actually already exists! Imgur should really make light of this as a more obvious feature!

If you take your image URL and add a specific letter to the end of it, it will alter the size for you

Take your URL of an image such as http://i.imgur.com/7iNNs3Th.jpg2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; then add a specific letter to the end of it before the .jpg!

I guess this isn't too well known!

s = Small Square (90×90)
b = Big Square (160×160)
t = Small Thumbnail (160×160)
m = Thumbnail (320×320)
l = Thumbnail (640×640)
h = Thumbnail (1024×1024)

As far as I can tell, it still retains the aspect ratio, so it won't make your stuff square, just shrink it till one both of the sizes are at, or below, the 1024x1024 values etc.

In my own words here's what that means:

Copy the “BBCode (message boards & forums)”. In other words click the blue “Copy” button just below and to the right of this.

Paste it into your forum post. It will look like this but will have Image at the rear of the URL.

http://i.imgur.com/tRWWmIt.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Using the secret code from above add a single letter like this, again it will have Image at the rear of the URL.

In this case I added the letter “h” = Thumbnail (1024×1024)

http://i.imgur.com/tRWWmIth.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Yes, it's that simple. Not too bad.

What I haven't figured out yet in imgur is setting up a file structure. I had done with photo bucket.

For example

Folder - RZ500
>Sub Folder – Engine
>Sub Folder – Electrical
>Sub Folder – Powder Coat
Etc.

Has anybody done this in imgur?

Here is an example using the instructions from above:

I was using them and for some reason I quit. Maybe it was the $40. Hindsight is 20/20.

Switched to image shack. They have a half off membership. Problem I could not see my old images. They might show up today.

That's because you don't have to pay for it :grin:
Sorry, but forum attachments won't be the answer here - the costs of this server come out of my own pocket, including when upgrades/migrations need to be done.
Think of how long this forum has been around. How many pics have been posted over those years. How many more years it will be around, and how many more pics will be posted.
And it's not just this website either. This is the quiet one. There's the 350 forum too.

If Tom wants to move the website to a hosting service then maybe attachments could be an option, as that is often cost effective. But no matter how cost effective it is, it's still more expensive than FREE (which is the cost to Tom/the club now).

Nothing is really free (as photobucket are proving)!
