Cost of bike repair and restoration

#1 Post by Straycat » Mon Aug 14, 2017 5:06 pm

We all know how much it costs us to restore, fix or maintain our bikes.

This makes a good read, im glad such costs are not anywhere near what we see.

It definitely takes deep pockets to play.

And rider salaries? How much do they get paid to bin the bike on lap 1? Whatever it is, it isn't enough. Takes big huevos to ride atop a missile.

Good find, thanks for sharing.

In May I decided against another two stroke resto and went to the dark side with a 1983 CB1100F. Jeez man all those extra moving parts sure add up quickly! But at least she'll look cool next to the NS..

Martman, went back to the dark-side recently too, and bought a couple of diesels. This is the one that sits next to my NS400R (they shared the same brochure in 1986).

If you want a really cheap bike the VF500 is the best you can buy :smt003
I remember when I bought my RD350 - the same guy also had an VF500 on ebay.

I got the RD350 (front fairing disassembled but complete) but for the VF (good shape, ready for riding) there was no bidder at 400€ start price...

Standard price is around 600-900€
My bikes:
RD500 YPVS 1GE
RD350 YPVS 31K 1985
Honda CBR 1000 RR SC57
Yamaha R1 RN04

Yes, true, got my 86 at a very good good price, then found this 85 super cheap (it will be my next winter project, a custom "Rothmans VF500R", full fairing and all sort of mod's )

Very nice rides! I went to see a guy with two 750 Interceptors a month ago but passed on them; one complete and another in parts. Both for the grand total of 400 bucks. Too many bikes in the garage.

I would, however, have room for a VF1000R project should one materialize..

Yes the VF1000R is on my list too, beautiful bike. There was one for sale not too far from me last year and no matter how hard I tried, I couldnt get to see it, it was at a bike shop not the owners house, the bike shop guy wasnt there much, or when I went by no one seemed to be able to show it to me, strange set of circumstances around it, probably was not meant to be.

Man, I had a friend growing up in Kirkland Lake, and while I had a shiny new RD350LC, he had a wickedly modified GPZ550. Love to get one of those someday.

Adding to the lusted after bike list, another guy at the time had a CX500 Turbo. There are two around the St John's area; I tried to make a deal with the one I could track down but it wasn't happening. No doubt for the better as it was pretty rough. But again, therein lies the challenge..

Back to the cost of restoring these things, I've been using one of Eastwood's home powder coating kits with excellent results. Highly recommend it to anyone thinking about it, it's very cheap addition to the shop.
