Seems the new kids might be catching on. Go figure.
Re: Cycle World Jan/Feb Issue. NSR/TZR/RGV 250 GP replic
Maybe a wider audience that tracks the 250's will bring some sanity to the values

If it brings a wider audience/more attention.....the prices will only go up further.
This past year the stroker prices and many parts have went way up in Japan....which at some point affects all stroker prices here in the US....

If interest in 2 strokes goes up as they reach the 25 year mark and become simple, legal and easy to import, more will be imported increasing the number of available bikes leading to prices settling down.
This will help folks realize that there is no need to pay $12,000 for a $7,000 bike.

As long as there were endless units to export from Japan that would make sense. The 250's had around 20,000 made a year for some models so there were lot's made. And they made them for many years so maybe 300,000 units conservatively. How many were exported and parted out who knows? I would suspect a good number of of them. If prices are going ballistic in Japan it's possible the major supply for the planet is slowly drying up? Fixed supply, increasing demand almost always means higher prices. Keep in mind there will likely remain a strong Japanese domestic market in the future also.more will be imported increasing the number of available bikes leading to prices settling down.

Re: Cycle World Jan/Feb Issue. NSR/TZR/RGV 250 GP replic
I think we will start seeing more of the ones sent to South Africa, the UK, Greece and even Canada start surfacing as people realize these bikes are "new again" for the USA and they make there way over here in greater numbers.
I think there are a lot more int he US than folks realize, but still they sort of panic and over pay for the first 250 or 400 they see.
I loved my CBR400RR. A 1989 black/gold I bought in 1990 - almost new. Great bike, although you really needed to wring it out to get the performance from it against the 600's and 750's of the day. On the street the 250's where never really a threat.
While the bike was awesome in the twisties, if the road even thought about straightening out the 600's and 750's would leave you in the dust. I would love to have another one, but I am not paying $8k to $10K for it. I would be hard pressed to pay more than $6k for it.
Perhaps 2018 will be the year the prices stabilize for the exotic 250/400 FIII bikes

Re: Cycle World Jan/Feb Issue. NSR/TZR/RGV 250 GP replic
By chance I managed to squeeze a visit to Fastline bikes, a well known supplier of classic road and race 2 strokes in the UK.
The owner, Kevin Mitchell was telling me that the price of the 250s in Japan at the moment(£20,000+ for some apparently) means he is now getting enquirers to sell them back into Japan , and most of his stock is sold to a long waiting list of buyers before they even get advertised, demand is way outstripping supply, its not worth his while now to bring them in from Japan...
Anyway, we all like pics, so here is a few I took..Lovely RZV500 was up for £15,000...
RVF400, next to no miles (under 1000) but £11,000...

Re: Cycle World Jan/Feb Issue. NSR/TZR/RGV 250 GP replic
Most expensive I have seen here. Let's just start at $10000 and see from there. For me, the early versions are the somewhat lesser of the 250 Replica's. Nice bikes for sure but not the same 1 year tech trikle down into production level of the later bikes of the late 80's/early 90's. 88/89/90/ brought new model each year. This was the golden age.The early one's being kind of pre replica's. They aren't even close in their capabilities as the V-Twin versions and later parallel twins like the KR and 3ma and as such are one tier down in their level of collectability in my opinion, especially at this price!

Re: Cycle World Jan/Feb Issue. NSR/TZR/RGV 250 GP replic
That guy is mental. There is no way he'll get anywhere close to $10K for that bike. Having bought and sold them myself I can say that of all of the 2 stroke bikes, the RG250 is among the least desirable. Most suggest that the best use for an RG250 is as a platform for an RZ350 engine. $10K is silly. That must make my TZR worth $20K...ns86 wrote:Most expensive I have seen here. A guy showed up at ATR last month with an 87 RG250 and said he wanted to get it "running". Didn't want the crank seals tested, didn't want anything done other than "get it running". A barn find apparently. What are the odds that this guy shows up at ATR and now an 87 RG250 is for sale 15 KM from ATR. Coincidence?
Re: Cycle World Jan/Feb Issue. NSR/TZR/RGV 250 GP replic
Good point John and heads up for anyone interested. I was 2nd in line for one and a spare 2 weeks ago but the first guy bought them. Good deal at $2000 for both with title but in need of lots of work. Not on my short list regardless.

Re: Cycle World Jan/Feb Issue. NSR/TZR/RGV 250 GP replic
I talked to the guy. It is the same bike that was at ATR a few weeks ago. 10 years in storage and this guy finds it and buys it. Andy got it "running" as per his request and now the owner is trying to get rich off of his barn find.
I know the bikes you missed Dan. The new owner sent me pics when he got the bikes home. The 2T world is small.

Ten grand for an 87 rg250 is nut's for sure. One in BC for sale for weeks now at $5500 and not selling. I think $5000 would be a great price for a seller! Glad a fellow smoker got that deal a few weeks back. I don't complain when I miss something, I have been the lucky one more times than not .

RGV500's for one, I mean 2 The lucky one more times than not. If I had of bought the bike Bolly bought, I wouldn't have found my bike lift later that day. I wouldn't have found some others after that. If a seller in BC hadn't of sold 2 NSR250's on me he wouldn't have offered me 2 nicer other oness after. If my Nephew's engine hadn't of blown up coming east with my RGV500's, I would have had them a summer earlier. If I had of, it may have been me that died around the corner instead of my 998 buddy. His death slowed me down on the street, because I pass by on almost every ride.
