RD 500 oil check valve for RG
Hi group,
As I finish off refurbishing an RG, I was wondering if anyone knows if the inline oil check valve used on RZ/RD 500's is something that might work on the RG. The RG carb oil valves are only somewhat effective. Not sure if an inline check valve upstream of the oil pump would work that well, or if the orifice size is right....so just asking if anyone has explored anything like this. I have used a simple off/on valve before on a previous RG I had, but that can be detrimental if you happen to forget about it one day...don't ask.
I'm going to be checking out my oil pumping volume anyway, in the next few days, while I run some premix.
Cheers,
kanuckRG

Welcome aboard, new member. Do I sense you're an RG250 owner also? Would this help, they seem to be good quality? Anyone have experience with these ?
From RG500.com,
"Comes with four CNC Spigots, 4 ball bearings, 4 new springs and instructions. Replace your leaking oil check valves. With time and use, the OEM springs wear, causing the original spring to wear and leak."

The same check valves work, I use them on both my RZ500s and both RG500s and no problems..

Re: RD 500 oil check valve for RG
Thanks guys for the quick response and info (no, I don't have an RG250, just on my second 500...and trying to find the whereabouts of my first modified one:). I hadn't been on the RG500.com site for some time, and recognize some of their stuff. I'd put that Airtech seat on my first RG500 and painted/decaled up, it looked great. I have their air filters for my present 'stocker'.
So, tacky1, do you mean you use the stock RZ valve, inline on your RG?

Re: RD 500 oil check valve for RG
Nope. I use and a lot of RZ owners use snowmobile inline check valves. Fixes the problem both bikes have of leaky stock check valves.

Re: RD 500 oil check valve for RG
Greetings, first post-
has anyone here changed the OEM check valves? I have applied as much heat to the carb body as I am willing to without knowing that is how to get them out.
Back story- I broke the oil line barb at the carburetor, I made a replacement and was drilling out the old one when I discovered the check valve. I would like to get an intact one out to examine.

Yes, I saw that, thanks. I suppose that would include instructions for getting the old ones out I was thinking that since I had done 90% of the work to make my own If I got one out intact I could finish the job. I may just go with my best effort, I am guessing there is just a seat for the check ball. Or maybe I will buy the kit.

Got it out. Put the nipple in a vise, supported by a gage pin, wiggled the carb body a bit and it came apart. The fact that the check ball is .125 in indicates that someone has been in here before and that this isn't stock. Also, even though I have probably ridden the bike less than 100 miles it wasn't smoking excessively, indicating that there isn't much oil leaking into the carbs.

Re: RD 500 oil check valve for RG
I use wood chisel to take the oil spigots out and use only one check valve (inline) instead of 2
Re: RD 500 oil check valve for RG
Hi everyone.
I am also in the process of debugging a lot of oil, coming out of the exhausts. I believe it may be the oil check valves. The bike was running very well but after 2 miles it started to stop at low revs. I assume it's due to tons of oil.
I purchased some Yamaha inline valves and assume you need to cut the pipe between the oil pump and the carb but wanted to check if this is all you need to do and if this assumption is correct?
Do you just leave the old valve and spigot in place?
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Rich
