Last Track Day 2019. Free For All. NEW VIDEOS UNCUT

#1 Post by rz500guytexas » Wed Dec 04, 2019 3:27 pm

Well end of another fun season of track day riding. I will be looking forward to riding the TZ 250 next year. Hope to write up a years end perspective together with high points of the events. The bike performed flawless all year and is dialed in as close as ever with the new BST wheels. Best modification to date on the bike but not cheapest.

The videos are last session Sunday. Wet Saturday morn and Sunday was cooler than wanted. Sun setting late in day caused a few run offs for me. I changed jetting due to the 60 degree temperature and 30% humidity level. I was riding with the ARC class. This is an advanced class for improving skills. Racers and riders looking to go to the advanced group will take class. Ty Howard is the head instructor and a friend of mine helps him do video for training purpose.

This last session was dog eat dog mess. There was no inside passing due to cold track and no outside passing from the esses to turn 9. Outside passing was 6 foot and if they had tipped in it was their corner. The problem in the advanced level 2 group is people have the money to buy the big fancy liter bikes but do not have the skills needed. Fast in straight line and park in corners. A Pannigale V4 or R1 will do over 180mph on the back straight with a tailwind.

I had several liter guys not appreciate being passed in a corner or being out braked. To aggravate things more there was a fast as shit 15 year old girl railing by them on a 400 Ninja. She was a little cocky but could back it up. She would give us all a little nudge and I think some of the riders took it personal. I thought it was absolutely great and was fun to watch. I had an Aprillia take a corner from me and that was when I said heck with the abuse. Re- passed him before the esses. Later had an R1 I believe, reddish bike, not want to give me the corner after out braking him before 11. He hung right next to me causing a distraction so I went sightseeing. I said heck with it came back on track right before the grass on back straight. Took him two laps to catch me then he pulls beside me on front straight, looks at me, then accelerates to block pass into 1. I should have flipped his kill switch off, that close. I waited till my favorite section and passed him on the outside. I got held up in next turn so he inside passes me then inside passes another rider in a very dangerous section. You will see a fast kid riding a KTM 390 Cup bike pass him on the brakes before 11. Kid pulls off track on back straight then plays with everyone going into 12. He inside passes me but I know him. All in all good fun but had to discuss issues with instructor. Oh and forgot to mention a dumb ass clipped my elbow who decided to pit in across a hot track. He was in my class and we had a discussion. He said he was on race line and I said no. Another in our class was following me and saw it go down. He finally came up at end of day and confessed to what he did and apologized. Just fess up and move on. I told him that is the most dangerous thing he can do on track and he should never ever, ever, forget what he did.

And second video is me having it out with an HP4 Race. This was one of the most fun few laps I have had in long time. When I saw what bike it was I knew it took all session to catch me so the race was on. He was sitting beside me on pit out. We both gave each other room and respect and had fun. I gave him a thumbs going onto the back straight after out braking him into 11.

are you going to race the TZ, or run with the " people have the money to buy the big fancy liter bikes but do not have the skills needed. Fast in straight line and park in corners." ?

That i am not sure of. I need to be sure I can fit on it as comfortably as possible with no hip cramps. This past weekend showed what the liter bike can do. Put a proper rider on them and it is impressive to watch. The guy on the HP4 said I can ride it. Had to ask and he said OK. Eleven Motorsports had a Pannigale V4 for rent at the event. Another track group is holding a race license school next July at COTA and am seriously thinking about it since I know the track so well.

with the TZ you should have a class where there isn't such bike disparity, and being "obsolete" maybe more mature guys with different goals/motivation than you might find with current model bike classes.

Exactly what I was thinking. Those hyper bike are nice but I am too old for that speed. I think the tz is going to be a handful. Hoping to have most power in midrange. It is going to be what it is. Am trying to get a second set of pipes.

Paul your experience is why I do not look forward to pending time on track with people who behave like that in a hobby level event.

You will find the same ego jerk behaviour if you go race the TZ, be prepared for it at all levels unfortunately.

I don't see the point of getting all tangled up with folks that act as if they are on full sponsored rides with unlimited medical support.

yes, it is at every level.

but if you are racing in a proper class with "like" bikes, you can choose to run behind the more competitive group. heck, you can take a bad start and avoid anyone you want - unless you get lapped.
with like bikes, anyone you pass will likely stay passed, or be roughly your skill level.

now, I don't know.
it was pretty specific and well populated when I ran them.

obviously classes/size will depend on the club/organization he enters through.

But that's what I am saying - in the US outside of actual historic events in this day and age, the TZ is going to be grouped with SuperSport 600s and maybe even SuperStock 1000s.
So in a club racing situation you will just have the track day shenanigans with race sanctioned dive bombing and elbow bashing egos this time.

Since long I have a good strategy to avoid those kind of situations.
Just subscribe the the fast group and you're done.
Up to my experience the wannabe Rossis are always in the medium groups. But they don't dare to pick the fast group if they have a little bit of brain left.
Those who haven't, usually crash in the first two heats.

My second strategy was to mainly go to Kart tracks where you run against Supermoto bikes.
Extremely low cost, low average speed levels, low differences in vehicle acceleration/speed. On the downside few or no gravel zones and usually no medical staff on site.
The peak of this is riding Pitbikes on indoor Kart tracks.

Admittedly you'll need a new bike to test this advice ;-)
Bye
Martin

as long as the bikes have roughly the same top speed this stuff isn't too much of an issue.

Like the pit bike advice. Will have to play a slow round of golf and ponder this. I am truly happy to see some input. Will put my take on this, thanks. Thus the year end write up. I use to debrief with Rick on the drive home and now it is Mr. Toomey. So far he is ok with it.

Speaking of pit bikes, I picked up one of these in October. The idea is to get myself in better track shape in a simpler cheaper way.

Ohvale 160 in the house :)

And IN the Tahoe >:)

This is way more than just a 'pit bike' or 'mini bike'
It is intended to be used as a proper track & race bike
I just hope to use it to stay some what riding fit LOL :keke::shrug:

back to TZ250's against bigger bikes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yEkLsm3Z3A

shorter tracks will reduce the top end advantage of newer liter bikes too.
