ELECTRICS DIED AFTER DELUGE

#1 Post by stevebozzy » Sat Apr 11, 2009 6:12 pm

Got caught in a torrential downpoor, the 500 kept running with misfires
the revcounter was fluctuating between 0 and red line.
got home OK but now only engine runs ( 1st kick as always )
no lights or horn works,or YPVS .not even warning lights
revcounter is still intermitant.
All fuses are OK.
where shall i start looking ?
thanks

Stator. You battery is dead. Check your stator wires and voltage regulator. The regulator wires can vibrate off if the clip is broken. Also, the regulator is in an area that might retain water and make a bad connection if the terminals haven't been cleaned in a while.

My bike has lived in a dry climate and I went through a lot of electrical gremlins. Fuse blocks are known to be junk. They corode and terminals snap. Just replace it. Mine wouldn't pass enough current to blow the fuse. Ignition swiches go bad. Could be your problem now. Thats why there on ebay all the time. Mine fried the connector. Thermo switch for the fan, its on the thermostat housing. Goes bad pulls too much current. Its on the same circuit as the YPVS and pops the fuse. Will kill the controller. Unpug the the thermo switch and see if it fixes the fuse pop. Pins push out of the multiple connector plugs. Look at all the plugs from the backside to see if there seated. Clean inspect lube everything. Bad connections cause most part failures.

Good luck and I want to hear you got it smokin again.

Hope you fix it Steve.

I had a strange fault on my FJ1200, a couple of years ago I had just washed it, I was sitting in the garden when I heard the starter motor engage, 'Someone's stealing my bike!!!'.

Nope, it was doing it all by itself, only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. I had all the fairings off to check the wiring (all original, untouched and in good condition) and sprayed it with a water hose everywhere to reproduce the fault (which I couldn't!).

It did this a few more times when parked in the rain and one day it popped a fuse riding in the dry but it's cured itself, very strange.

If you want proper electrical trouble try owning a T140 Bonneville with Lucas electrics!

Cheers

Gary

you are correct ,the battery is dead, and wont charge up.
i will buy a new battery tommorow and then take it one step at a time until i find the cause.
maybe the rain had nothing to do with it .

i have took the side panels off to get at the battery,
the main fuse has blown - but the bike still runs
( even with no main fuse at all ):-?
i have checked the other fuses next to the headlight they are all OK
after wriggling the fuse wires about now everything works .
my guess is the loose fuse box wires caused the problem.
it dont understand what the main fuse does ( nothing on my bike)
i have bought a new battery, should I fit it ,before i find a fault.
should i consider my bike fixed ? or should i look for something more
my electrical knowledge is not great.
thanks
steve
ps the old battery has charged up now .the fuse had blown in the permanent charger wire ,that is connected on the bike.
