Pilot Air jet cleaning by removing brass ball. How too???

#1 Post by Redline Junkie » Sun Jul 22, 2018 1:59 pm

I’m considering removing the brass ball that cover the air jet to clean it. Anyone done this before, is it worth opening the can or worms?

Thanks
Rob

yes do it. its easy enough to do. very small drill, do it part way thru and use shank of drill to wobble and pull the ball out. hammer old ball or new one (ebay has em) in after. one of the aircooled forums had a good guide but what i said is pretty much it. Easy, just takes a while.

Ok thanks Jon. My 1UA carbs were in bad shape when I retored the bike and I soaked the carbs in Gunk Hydro-seal and they cleaned up nice. The air jets would be the only area still in question. My bike runs strong but has a rich feeling around 4-5k rpm I can’t solve. Most times I just ram past it and let it get on the pipe but the police are going to catch me speeding soon. Lol

I am in the same boat with a 1UA left carb. Low speed jets are both plugged and i can't get them opened. How does a jet work if there is a ball plugging It? Trying to learn more about these carbs bit they are vexing me some. Thanks.

The ball is there because you can't drill a hole with a 90 degree bend it. Drill a vertical hole and then drill an intersecting horizontal hole and press a ball into the top of the first one to close it off. There might also be a jet installed in the first hole before the ball is pressed in, as in this case.
Look at Yamaha's first radial monoblock calipers, there is some clever drilling there to make a one piece caliper with fluid passages on both sides. The one connecting both sides is plugged by the bleed screw.
