Ignition system for racing?

Getting an engine built for vintage racing. Gathering ignition parts. Want to start with stock parts to keep it simple, consider programmable system once I am up and running. Planning to keep the power valve. No lights of course but I will need tach and temp gauge. I have a 1988 Rotor & CDI. Do the stator and coil need to be 1988 or later as well? Do I need regulator? any problem running a battery eliminator? LMK if anyone has any of the above for sale.
