American RZ350 1984 model, shift drum

#1 Post by redman412 » Thu Dec 03, 2015 5:15 pm

Hi
Does anyone know if a banshee shift drum, forks, bearing and shaft would fit an 84 RZ? Mine went to the craps and I dont want to buy used parts and have the same problem later.

Not a part that sees much wear unless you abuse the crap out of your tranny. I have only ever seen worn shift forks and they are likely due to abuse of the bike. Are you power wheelieing and smashing your tranny into gear? If not then you shouldn't wear out your shift assembly until there are a ton of miles on the bike. I have never seen any wear on shift rods, and only minimal wear on a shift drum (mostly blueing). I've taken a number of these engines apart.

Evan, I agree, although I have seen blueing also but considered it to be factory heat treatment from the evenness of it.

That could definitely be what it was, I was suprised to see it on the drum as I can't see it being a part that gets very hot. The forks are usually what wears out. I have some extras if you would like. I can imagine extremely dirty oil could cause wear but it would take a longggg time to wear out a drum and rods.

Re the shift forks I'm not 100 percent sure but from memory Aaron gave reference to a banchee swap a few years ago, again from memory and without further searching I recall that it was a negative on the exchange.

I talked to the mechanic and seems that it needs to split the cases to see the problem. As for parts Wicked in Cali has everything. But is it worth it to fix it? Bike plus extras I purchased thru the 2 years I owned, total $4800. To fix it could be over $3k, including parts. Its a dilemma. Thanks for the responses, I will decide thru the winter if to sell it or just part it out.

not sure why this is a 3k fix, but i guess we dont know the extent of the work. DIY is cheaper than a shop if you have the skills, and yes forks/drum are a spilt the cases job, but its not hard to do.

What dilemma? Pick up a used tranny and do it yourself. It isn't rocket science. If you can read the manual you can do the work.

Or, even easier, buy a complete used running motor for less than $1000 and drop it in and ride.

3 grand sounds like a full motor rebuild on a 4-stroke. You can have that motor out and apart on a bench in a day yourself.

Reads like the "mechanic' is perpetuating the Greedy Ass**le stereotype.
Likely it's a bent shifter fork Or even Wrong oil.
Real Life here; snooze and lose.

so I got the Engine back from Wicked, installing it it. Roger says that the front spacer for the front mounts are missing. I didnt have them when I took the engine out. Is it critical to have them?
