RGV thermostat

#1 Post by motosapien » Thu Mar 31, 2016 8:05 pm

I have an RGV thermostat, I checked, its working and also is a direct fit. The rating says 50C, I think RZ's is in mid 70C. I know that the bikes perform well at lower temperatures. What is the optimum temperature for RZ...is this upgrade good or bad?

Thanks

Good trick for hotter climates...but need the spacer for it to work properly. You can find them on ebay for chips or Brian on this forum used to sell them but haven't seen him for ages.
Im about to fit one to my bike.

Yea that was the plan and try to keep it cool during summer. Can you please elaborate about the spacer, I read somewhere that its a direct fit.

Thanks

The RGV thermostat has a rubber gasket that is split enough so the thermostat slips into it if ya get what I mean. Ill see if I can get a pic. I wonder I that would take up the space?

The thermostat extends as it heats up, it will fit cold but bottom out in the head before fully open. Throw it in a pot of boiling water and measure vs. cold and you'll see what I mean.

Could someone please explain why the lower temp RGV thermostat is a worthwhile modification ?

I always thought once they opened that was that :smt002

They open when they reach the rated temp, but as the temperature drops through cooling they start to close again, restricting flow to the radiator. This modulating of flow maintains the temperature at the set point. A 20 degree cooler thermostat will keep the engine temperature 20 degrees cooler provided that there is sufficient cooling capacity.
There is also a Yamaha snowmobile thermostat that fits that is 50 degrees.

I understand two strokes usually produce best power at about 50 Deg

I have one on mine that I bought on ebay as a kit with the spacer, it runs nicely with my large radiator.

My running temp is generally about 52 to 53 according to my trail tech

Thanks Glyn, I'd have had to clean the garage to find the box......

This will still bottom in the head without a spacer, put it in a pot of boiling water and drop it straight into the head to see how much more room you need.
