New RZ 350 Transmissions & Parts

#1 Post by TDR_50 » Mon Jun 27, 2022 3:45 pm

It has been a while since I posted here but I am inquiring about how much interest there would be in making these parts available. I have access to the manufacturing plant to have them made. With the current world situation on shipping, pricing, and production we will see what prices come out like. Last checked the complete transmission, 11 gears and 2 shafts were about $1500.00 and about $100.00 a gear.
Banshee shift drums and shift forks are the same and available. All the OEM Yamaha circlips and shims are the same as Banshee as well. Setting up a poll to see what interest there may be.

For RZ parts there's no real shortage as these gearboxes virtually last forever unless you lost all of the oil.
As a result you can easily get a cheap used tranny allover the world.
The only damage I had was with a Banshee tranny in my racebike (which was abused digitally for years).
It was a major PITA to get a used one, as most of them looked like mine.

If it comes to modifications, there is already a transmission for the RZ available from Nova. Price is somewhat similar to the above. Ratios are optimized for track use.

So where would be any demand?
- Modified banshees. They'd buy reinforced gears / tranny for their 421+ engines.
- Racing. They'd buy stuff that has "custom" ratios
- Enhanced quality: If you'd offer special treatment/coatings that would enhance easy shifting and/or durability, some owners with deep pockets may replace their working parts with yours.
Bye

I search daily for RZ transmissions and rarely do I find one and they are getting expensive as well. We are getting set up to have complete RZ based engines and was going to use the bulk of the transmissions for that application. Cases being made now and all the other components are available aftermarket. Yes we use the Nova and Robinson transmissions here in the US but the price is close to $ 2500.00 for Robinson and Nova with $$ conversion and shipping is over $3000.00
MK If you have any RZ transmissions or see any please send me the link as I am always buying them up.

I would be interested in the ones you have. Shoot me a PM with the price. All 3 adds say no USA shipping.

Thanks, Tony

There are improvements to be made to the gearboxes, yes, even though they last ok.

1- the gear for the 1st speed runs on bronze bush. The bush will wear out and wear down the shaft where it runs with it. That's the output shaft!!!

The aircooled RD models and TZs from the '70s all run on a needle bearing with a suitable size. Yamaha droped the ball on this one when they decided to drop the bearing in favor of the bronze bush.

2- The kick start idler gear; The same b.s.; The gear runs on a bronze bush that wears out and some times the clearance becomes so great that the gear starts to wobble, shear the retaining clip and comes loose , grinds against the big primary gear and cause damage.
The solution?
Again a needle bearing of the suitable size is available on the TZs and TDs from the '70s exactly in the same position since the gearboxes are very simmilar.

3- And then not so serious we have the clutch that should also use a needle bearing instead of the bush.

Again the solution is inside the 70s TZs and TDs that have nice needle bearings in the exact size since the collar used as inner race is the same part on both bikes.
I tried to do the 1st. 2 conversions but couldn't find any machinist in my Country that would be able to harden the parts surface where the bearings would run.

I will also criticize Nova Racing for offering these close ratio conversion kits for the RD and still we see a first gear with a damned bush when it would be as easy to supply it with a needle bearing. Look at the air cooled models! Just pretend that you're making these kits for the 70's RDs. SAVE OUR SHAFTS Please!

Motoholic71: Yes the #1 issue is the bronze bushing. The one I have seen go bad the most is 5th gear pinion . The one just after the fixed 1st gear on the main shaft. That one destroys the main shaft. With the current supply issues and Taiwan tension I have paused this project. On our new engines I have opted to use Robinson transmissions close ratio gear box for our high end race bikes. Expensive but made here in the USA and available. The cheaper transmission parts mentioned here are more for the general RZ replacement and restore customers.
2: There are replacement bushings for the kick idler gear to be replaced. Replacement bushings can easily be made for the other gears, but only if they have not destroyed the shaft. The secondary shaft is available as a Banshee part and works. The main shaft with the fixed gear is the main issue. I may have a small run of them made here in the US as I have at least 10 transmissions that only need that part. Wont be cheap by any means. Right now the motorsports related manufacturers are caught up and slowed down to a crawl so getting them will get easier and shorter lead times.

There is a company in England that makes replacement gears and whole transmissions.

https://novaracing.co.uk/

My transmission was in bad shape, so I replaced it.
