Need balancing

#1 Post by Zombie » Mon Feb 20, 2017 12:57 am

I need a crank trued, balanced to perfection and welded for a dirtbike (IT/YZ490) build. I know the 490 is a paintmixer to begin with, but who can make it the least shakey with decent turnaround time?

Id be satisfied if it only buzzed like my CR500.

Contact House of Balance. They do all my stuff but not sure if they'll reassemble and weld. All they do is dynamic balancing so the crank will need to be assembled/trued w/o the rod assembly for balancing.

Why does it need to be welded? Are they prone to coming apart? Creates an added layer of complexity when balancing and trueing.

Durability. The 490 engine (with proper porting and head mod to run properly) likes to rev. Problem is, like I said before, its so out-of-balance, it shakes like a paint mixer on nitrous. I have fixed the porting and head issues, and now that it will run properly, needs the crank properly balanced to literally not shake itself apart. They can snap off engine mounting tabs in stock form. (engine was being held in frame with only 1 tab, the swingarm pivot and head stay!) And to take full advantage of the porting, it will need to rev higher.

I have used these guys to rebuild one of my CR500 cranks. They add weight to the crank to counter balance the piston and make the bike vibrate less. Both my CRs are tuned. One with a hill climb tune and one with a road race tune. Both used to shake the shit out of me. I rebuilt the road race motor with the counter weight and the difference is unreal. Barely vibes now. Give them a call. They are great guys to work with.

What was your turnaround time?
I'm gonna have a $800 crank in a $300 bike..

My '96 CR500 hardly shakes. Its more of a buzz, and except for the silencer, stock. Maybe I just got a good one?

Sometimes the value isn't part of the equation. We do what we do 'cause we wanna. I'm sure there's more than a few big dollar RZ's 'round here.

I know. My Yamaprilia is going to run a little north of $17k when all is said and done. Just thinking about pricing of the IT/YZ later on If I decide to sell it. Ive seen nice (restored) examples going for almost $4k. Getting harder to find parts for it though (its a '83).

Theres alot of quality choices out there, but Eric should be a one stop shop for you. His work is stellar and a very good reputation and respected following. His experience w big bores & their accocciated issues would benefit you.

Both my crs buzz. That was the problem. Bloody hands would go numb. My street one doesn't buzz or vibrate anymore after the crank was weighted.
Makes street riding a little more comfortable.

Gore doesn't offer balancing.

Correct Mundo! Spoke w hin over the weekend, he said..he recommends Crank Works.

I thought someone closer to Zomb would be better, but the soccer ball got kicked back south here.
I know Clough did a hybrid Daytona crank for me in house, Klemm used to but believe he utilizes Crank Works as well as there neighbors.

When you get yours done..let me know what your impressions were. As I have a 490 motor waiting for...something... ...someday..lol

Do you have the 4 or 5 speed?
The head mod and porting really wakes the 490 up..
Instead of the old IT frame, I'd love to get it in the WR500 chassis. Superior in every way, except the engine.
And bulbus gas tank.

The motor is likley going into a Tri Z frame, as two friends have some killer ATC hybrids have a CR500 powered ATC250r and the other is having a KX500 big bore Kawasaki "Tecate" ATC built. So I was just .. thinkin Im getting a roller chassis Tri Z frame avail..so I might join the club..eventually...lol The current Tri Z will going into the hospital @ Klemm Vintage for a 350cc big bore & either his portwork or Rob Selvy.

Its a 1988 5 speed. I havent checked yet. I was told it had some top end work, I got it 5 months ago for $100. Was pulled from a 3 wheeler conversion. Guy said it was a noisy SOB...lol

Just keep your weight over the front Questo- even in stock form, they hit pretty hard for a big bike when it gets on the pipe! You are gonna have an evil ride..

I would consider balancing & head mod absolutely mandatory though. Or a constant diet of Sunoco silver (100 octane).

I decided I'm going to go to YZ spec with the rest of the bike. That fat gas tank is a pain in the kneecaps to grip. Does anyone make a standard capacity reproduction yellow (would be more period-correct) or white YZ tank? Don't want to replace one bulbus tank with another..
