Installing a 4:1 ratio tach on an RZ?

#1 Post by Mr.Cool » Thu Feb 23, 2017 3:52 pm

Maybe this is a common question but I haven't been able to find any good info on it. Has anyone here done it? My guess is i might need to find or more likely make a small reduction gearbox to match it to the 5:1 of the rz engine.

This is for a racing machine so I only need a tach and a temp gauge. The Smiths replica gauges that go to 12,000 are perfect because the shift point would be vertical at the shift point and the numbers would be set the right way.

Does it need to be a mechanical gauge?

For the sake of the question I'll say yes. There are some non-mechanical tachs I'm looking at but they are about 3-400 vs 30-40 for a mechanical one.

I'm going to go with a whole new gauge setup. I'm thinking KOSO. They even have a GPS speedo adapter.

If it's a race bike, I would look into either an Aim system or Alfano Astro.

Both are data loggers. I prefer the Alfano. Water temp, exhaust temp, high/low temps lights for both, speed, rpm, what gear you are in, shift lights, g force sensor and track map printing, best lap time, last lap time. A bunch of stuff. I picked one up the other day for $160us used.

Yes its a race bike, race only. In the past we've always just ran a tach and a small Fahrenheit temp gauge, The K.I.S.S. approach if you will. I had a look at the AIM web page and their products, I like it and definitely see the benefit, but its also plenty of extra sensors and wiring, I do like to keep a clean bike and I also feel like analog gauges feel more at home on an RZ.

I'll probably just run a stock RZ tach this season since budget is already going to be super tight.
