Is a strip down the only way ?

It's not something that you can really hear until it's too late.
You can pull the top end and check for free play in the rods. The book has how much is acceptable, or someone here might know off the top of their head

Re: Worn Crank Symptoms
loud knocking noise at idle. <--our crank is wasted. I've heard from all on this board that a NEW crank is the way to go. Will go that route. Probablem is the pin is not replaceable like a 400 / 350 crank, could be a loose fit after awhile. Fresh crank, tight fit, all new parts...sounds good to me. Have your mechanic check "true" when you get it from the postman, so it hasn't "shifted" while being shipped.

Re: Worn Crank Symptoms
Paying to rebuild the crank will be way cheaper than paying to fix the damage the crank can cause if it lets go when the engine is running.
