88' rz350 jetting thoughts
Hi all, toying with a almost all stock rz.
Only modification is a set of DG pipes. Stock air filter and air box.
Current jetting is 27.5 pilots, and 185 mains.
It seems to be a bit boggy off the line, although the pilots seem adequate. It will pull hard up to 10k rpm, then struggle to pull 2nd gear. Thinking about bumping up pilots to 30, maybe 195 to 200 on the mains. Around 1400' elevation.
This was a project bike that appeared to run fine this way before it was parked with stock pipes.
What do you guys think?

Also curious, what causes the clutch to slip for a second, then grab? My friend I got the bike from said they did this when they were new. I just changed the oil, will see if this helps.

If the only thing you did was pipes, your betting should still be bang on. When was the last time the carbs were cleaned? What kind of transmission oil are you using? A lot of the new oils are synthetic and have friction modifiers in them which causes clutch slip. You can change the clutch springs out to half heavy duty and half regular.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I got to thinking maybe my float levels are too low. When first starting, it seems to run great, and pull good up the street. Then on the second pass it acts like it's running out of fuel. Carbs were cleaned over the winter, and again last night.
As for the clutch, unsure of what oil was in it, but drained it and refilled with 10w 30 motorcycle grade oil. It will slip for a second, then grab good and won't slip again until you pull the clutch in.
Bike has not run in 10 years until this winter.

That is a first for me hearing the slight slipping. For 4-strokes always run JASO MA oil to prevent issues with wet clutches. Can check the float situation. If they are well out it will cause funny issues wiht the rest of your jetting too.

Sometimes old oil will oxidize and stick to the friction plates like a varnish. When the friction plate heats up and mates with the clutch plate, it will also grab. A little maintenance can help. Take a scotch brite to the friction plates and it should help. While the friction looks smooth, it is not polished, hence why it's a friction plate.

None I ever rode... I had the same issue. Clutch slip especially when cold. I changed to dino gear oil and have not had any slipping since.

Id agree that some synthetics can cause this, but these didnt have the issue when new...

I've been using 20-50 synthetic with no problems. It made a big difference in finding neutral when hot. My 1990 Canadian has 53,000 miles on it.
